sparql - six performance patches for solo bass guitar - link in bio

programmed and composed fall 2023
recorded jan 10th 2024 at the goatshed germantown, ny

in august of 2023 I started experimenting with the process of digitally converting the analog output of my bass guitar.
the initial idea was that the range of the bass guitar combined with monophonic performance would provide fundamental frequencies
that could be easily read and converted. I was wrong.
In the programming environment, I experimented with multiple methods and discovered a shared failure to properly track the pitch and velocity. eventually I landed on a few methods with varying degrees of success and accuracy.
using these tracking objects I programmed six distinct performance patches using an array of triggering techniques, while simultaneously developing compositions inspired by scattered ideas around highway clusters, zoomorphism, and unsettling frequency arrangements. sometimes when playing it felt like my bass was fighting the software.
after a few overhauls in between bicoastal performances, I recorded the pieces live in upstate ny the winter of 2024.

studio buildout pt. 1 - how it started…
Building studio systems has always been my favorite part of the work, but this is the first time we are building a live production room from the ground up. I feel like I’ve been holed up in here for a month decoupling walls, cutting custom shelves, researching furniture, making acoustic panels. It’s been meticulous but incredibly fun (except for sanding drywall) Biggest thanks to my friends Chad and Emil for sharing their expertise helping the studio come to life. We are almost done, can’t wait to share it with the 🌎

Free Show, Fri, July 18th, NYC

Eric Frye is an American composer and artist. He is known for his solo performance and installation work - an exploration of the dissociative and psychoactive functions of sound and image.

Ñaka Ñaka is the alias of Jeronimo Jimenez, a musician and producer based in Mexico City. He is known for his experimental and club-oriented music, which he often releases through his own label, Pauf Recordings Ltd. Ñaka Ñaka has also released music with labels like Opal Tapes, Black Opal, and Angoiss Tapes.

SPARQL is the solo project of New York-based experimental musician Ryan Woodhall (also of Yellow Tears/Halflings/Red Light District) Compositionally, SPARQL’s gleaming cinematic soundscapes are influenced by his work in commercial sound design. In a live setting, Ryan encorporates custom software, handmade controllers, and digital synthesis.

Michael Flora is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His work explores the emergent phenomena that occurs through non-deterministic and autopoietic processes. Informed by architecture, systems, perceptual psychology, visual art, and computer music, his works often take the form of large scale installation and performance.

Zarla is the music selection arm of multimedia artist and CalArts alumnus Carla Bobrowicz. New York-based since 2004, her output parallels her lineage as a record collector and multi genre enthusiast. Zarla broadcasted 2GetherWeChill on Newtown Radio from 2016-2020 and now makes appearances at Brooklyn and Manhattan endroits. by @wooodhall

This Friday at Dada in Ridgewood will see the gathering of diverse NYC-based experimental/leftfield musicians Jacob Becker @jacob_becker__ , Mersa @mersa______ , and the premiere of a collaboration between SPARQL (@wooodhall Ryan Woodhall of Yellow Tears/Halflings) and composer Luke Moldof along with atmospheric selections by Houston-born NYC-based DJ Nihal Ramchandani.

SPARQL is a solo project of NYC-based experimental musician Ryan Woodhall (also of Yellow Tears/Halflings). SPARQL’s cinematic soundscapes are influenced by his work in commercial sound design, and in a live setting, he incorporates custom software, handmade controllers, and digital synthesis. For this performance, he’ll be accompanied by Luke Moldof on Pedal Steel guitar.

Mersa is a Queens, NY-based experimental electronic music duo formed in 2015 consisting of members Marshall Stacks and Diego Cohen. Crafting their sound through a continually evolving process of spontaneous live improvisation filtered through a unique style of editing and arrangement, Mersa recently released their debut self-titled album on Iowa-based experimental electronic label Liminal Ennui and is currently working on their follow-up album, as well as a double-live album/concert film.

Jacob Becker is an NYC based musician, whose artistic practice blends sound design and composition, stacking samples to tease out unexpected musical logics. An expansive palette of sonic fragments culled from a variety of archival sources, combined with heavily manipulated recorded instrumental and vocal sounds, form the basis of his work.

Influenced by the maximalist production techniques of the Bomb Squad and Skinny Puppy, Becker also counts electro-acoustic composer John Wall and sampling pioneer Carl Stone as key influences, with the work of Todd Edwards and Disco Inferno also providing inspiration. taken in Bushwick/Ridgewood by @wooodhall
