Challenge Barcelona Race Recap
-
Sarah looked at me concerned over the breakfast table
"Why have you got a black eye?"
Only then did I remember I got kicked in the face
In the moment I didn't feel a thing
The first few minutes feel like hours on the start line
Adrenaline, carbs & caffeine flowing through our veins
Standing there I sometimes wonder if it is the healthiest thing to be doing at sunrise on a Sunday morning
But after every race I am always eager to put my name down for another
-
With some fast swimmers to the left of me I knew it would be a furious start
Around the first bouy I was dangling in around 10th
It was strung out single file, the pace was hot
Between the surprisingly large swells I could just about make out the front group splitting away
I wish I could sit here and say it was a positioning issue
It was not
I resigned myself to battling shoulder to shoulder with the best of the rest
In hindsight to lose only 1 minute to some of the best swimmers in the sport seems like a small win
-
A rider near the front of our bike group was trying to communicate to those of us behind
Squinting through the rain without my visor I tried to decipher his message
✌️✊ ✌️✊✌️✊✌️✊✌️✊
I concluded he must be saying 20 meters as that was the legal draft limit
Few listened
I decided enough was enough at around 60k and put my head down
Legs felt good,
Watts were coming easy
Gaining on the group in front of me
And then I heard it
The dreaded hissing noise accompanied by white goo spraying everywhere
No it was not a Halloween decoration gone wrong, it was far worse
My race was done for at that 80 kilometer mark despite multiple attempts to reinflate myself and my rear tyre
The walk of shame back in to transition was, although short, quite undignified
I went over to an official and explained the situation
She gave me a look of sympathy
I handed her my timing chip
-
But my story does not end here
I didn't fly the family out here to sulk about the pissing rain and a flat tyre
I put on my run shoes and went out to finish what I started
When life gives you lemons you've gotta fill yourself up on sugar and make lemonade

Challenge Mallorca Race Recap
-
Second last race of the year but our first family πŸ‘Ό holiday β˜€οΈ
Was awesome to have Sarah & Arthur supporting out on course 😁
Having a child definitely changes your perspective on life and I was able to really enjoy the race on Saturday
-
Swim was not that fast but certainly furious with around 40 others on the start line 🌊
Dropped just after the Aussie exit when I started seeing red πŸ’€
Taking a month off swimming when Arthur was born certainly didn't help 😴
-
Loved every second of the bike 🚲 especially cycling with the other Brits abroad around the foothills of Mallorca ⛰️
My chain didn't seem to enjoy all the Spanish speed bumps but only had to get off once πŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈ
-
The run was tough with lots of hills each lap, cobbles and heat but the support from the town was great πŸ™Œ
It all certainly took its toll and I managed to haul myself to the finish line in a respectable 26th place 🏁
-
Was great to see some familiar faces out here and make some new friends πŸ€—
Excited for the next race on Sunday, Challenge Barcelona!
Let's see how the legs come around 🦡
-
Big shoutout to @the_brick_session for some class pics, @chmallorca for an epic event, @absolute_speed_ltd & @ezgains.co.uk for sorting my new bike out with some aero wizardry πŸͺ„
I reckon there's a few more family holidays out here in the future πŸŒ… taken in Peguera by @wooooodyy

I'm not very good at this social media stuff, better late than never hey, 70.3 Tours πŸ‡«πŸ‡· a good test of what the body was capable of 2 weeks post IM Lanzarote. Chuffed to come away with a 70.3 pb 3hrs 53 and enjoyed a few days exploring Tours afterwards on a mission to find the best boulangerie πŸ₯πŸ₯–

Excited to toe the start line at 70.3 Swansea next weekend, followed by IM Leeds at the end of the month! taken in Tours, France by @wooooodyy

Picked a nice easy race to kick off the season, only strong winds πŸ’¨ 2500m of climbing ⛰️ and scorching temps πŸ”₯ to deal with. All I can say is, if you want a challenge then sign up for IM lanzarote, you will not be disappointed πŸ™Œ

Had a decent swim, front pack on lap 1 felt cruisey but lost feet through a crowded 2nd lap coming out in 49 mins. I remember thinking to myself this is great, I haven't used much energy here and ready for a good bike and run βœ…οΈ

The optimism was short lived, I soon found myself on the first hill out of town pushing 350w with everyone cycling away from me. It's hard not to get carried away when you're racing, especially when it's the first race for 7 months but I reigned in the effort (couldn't keep up ☠️) and let them cycle off into the distance. The long draggy climbs and headwind made getting to the top of the island quite a challenge but thankfully once we turned around there was a nice tailwind to sail back into town ⛡️

The run is what I was looking most forward to. I was in great run shape and ready to unleash a fast marathon πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ... until I tried to put my shoes on...

It's amazing what you can do if you stay positive and I got out of transition, gave the announcer a high five and ferociously searched my pockets for those caffeine gels. 1 big lap (21k) and 2 small (10.5k) laps and then you're done. IM marathons always seem to be the same, set out at target pace and gradually fade to a shuffle but at least I didn't walk the aid stations. Managed to run 3 hrs flat after pushing the highest normalised power on the bike so overall happy with my performance and couldn't have done much more on the day 22nd/35.

Kudos to the guys up front, very impressive to see the level the sport is going to. Massive thanks to my 3 biggest supporters @sarah.janes_ @dimple_kainth and baby Woodman πŸ‘Ά due this summer β˜€οΈ taken in Puerto Del Carmen, Lanzarote by @wooooodyy

Can't beat sunny runs, an outdoor 50m pool, and epic (windy) rides on camp in Lanzarote. Even if I did spend the majority of the week getting my legs ripped off by Ant @thetriguys_coaching 🫠

Ironman Barcelona 8:04 recap

The gun πŸ”« goes & I quickly find myself in 4th position about 200m in to the swim thinking, this is great, all I need to do is hang on & not get dropped. Easier said than done. After about 30 mins, just as I was beginning to digest some of the Mediterranean I drank at the start, the pace was beginning to feel a bit too hot. I made the decision to drop off & swam the rest solo.

On to the bike 🚴 & I was in no mans land, 11 guys 2 mins up the road & a 25 man pack around 2 mins behind. Not the best spot to be in but I could see a few stragglers from the front swim pack ahead of me, so I decided to ride hard, catch them & hopefully stay away from the chase pack.

At the first turn around, about 40 mins in, I timed a 5 min gap to the front of the race & got my first glimpse of the peloton behind me. I knew the inevitable was about to happen, so I tried to stay near the front as I got gobbled up by the chase pack. I was on my limit a few times during the ride as the stronger cyclists made some attempts to split things up. I bridged a few gaps & even had a little dig myself. This only resulted in about 5 of the group being dropped over the course of the ride.

My run πŸƒ legs & lower back were not feeling too fresh. It took about 6k to loosen up a bit & actually feel like I could run but my pace was not great, I was beginning to wish I hadn't burnt as many matches on the ride as I had. But you've just gotta deal with what you've got & I made the best of the situation. It was a 3 lap run, the 2nd lap I walked the aid stations & by the 3rd lap I was walking 20 steps every time my watch lapped a k. Ironman is all about who slows down the least & that was the fastest I could go.

A lot was riding on this race, after a few months of bad performances it sort of felt like make or break. I did make a promise to myself at the start of the run that I would never do another ironman, funny how the brain works, a few days go by & I'm already planning my next season. See you at another start line in 2025 πŸ‘Š & thanks to everyone I have met on this journey.

If you made it this far, cheers! You really are a die hard fan.

My 3rd time racing Challenge Wales, it's feeling like a hometown race at this point 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿, safe to say I did not have it on the day

Managed to get round, 15 mins slower than last year, just happy to run down the finish chute

In awe of some great performances out there, well done to everyone who competed
