I’m not going to sugarcoat it, the last two years have been challenging for me, mentally, physically and emotionally. The one constant I’ve always maintained, to help me deal with those dark moments in life, is sport - namely surfing and Jiu Jitsu. Last night, I had the honour of receiving my black belt from my master Yannick Beven @ybjj_academy. I began training with Nick in 2010 and this milestone represents the culmination of a sixteen year journey of blood, sweat and tears, literally - but more importantly, friendship and learning. A proud moment. My voyage was definitely not linear. There were periods of frustration (blue belt for six years 😂), stagnation, self doubt, injury, introspection, determination, but ultimately evolution, both as a practitioner and a person. Martial arts have so much more to teach us than most people realise. Sure, if you train long enough, you’ll learn basic self defense. But should you venture a little further down the road less travelled, you’ll realise those same values we apply whilst on the mats, are actually the fundamentals of everyday life - respect, discipline, self control, perseverance and humility! We learn over time that the person we should fear the most is not the adversary opposite us, but our own ego. That’s what I truly love about this sport. There is no bullshit on the mats, nowhere to hide. Just you confronting your own fears. Trying to control your emotions through your breathing. Relying instinctively on techniques we’ve learned on our journey, to find a way out of uncomfortable situations - just like real life itself. Special thanks to Nick for the guidance, support and friendship over the years. To @bixentelizarazu @philippe.ragot.581 @nico.harambjj @mondoozaki for your continued encouragement and shared wisdom. To all the crew @ybjj_academy and those no longer with the club, thanks for drilling techniques and rolling with me over the years. Your collective energy is infectious. Regardless of how shitty I occasionally feel before going to training, I always leave feeling happier after sharing a few laughs & chokes with you clowns and that’s what keeps me coming back.

Great night tonight at @ybjj_academy . Congrats to everybody who received a new belt or stripes and well done to everybody else for showing up. Special mention to @marclacomare and @mondoozaki for receiving their black belts tonight, stoked for you both and very well deserved. Huge congrats also to big Josh and Alex for your brown belts. Dad, you left us twelve months ago today. Unfortunately I didn’t make it back in time to say goodbye in person, but you knew I was on my way. Thought I’d share some of my favourite childhood memories with you, so I hope they’ve got fibre up there with a good connection.

I’ll never forget sitting on your knee as a kid watching TV together, stealing sips of VB from your pewter. The smell of beer and Nobbys peanuts on your breath as you’d laugh uncontrollably. Dame Edna / Sir Les, Benny Hill, The Two Ronnie’s, Steptoe & Son, Porridge and of course Fawlty Towers. No wonder you had such a good sense of humour. Swimming at the RSL before we had the pool in Hayden’s Rd. Charles Aznavour blaring on your car stereo when you drove us to school. The annual family pilgrimage to the Gold Coast in the Holden Wagon and later, the Alfas. The amazing prawn, lettuce, spring onion rolls you’d make us for lunch during those holidays, so we could stay at the beach, keep surfing and not have to return to Driftwood. Visiting you in Port Douglas one year and both of us crying with laughter when the captain made you smear Vaseline in your moustache to seal your mask on a day trip, snorkeling out on the reef. We didn’t see eye to eye on politics and you could be a racist old bugger at times, but I always loved you and know that your love for the four of us was unconditional too. Miss you mate.
