Small-business owners: payroll and benefits issues rarely stay small when the underlying process is unclear.

Use this checklist to review the basics:

• Are employee and contractor classifications accurate?
• Are exempt and nonexempt classifications reviewed appropriately?
• Are hours, overtime, corrections, and off-the-clock work documented?
• Do benefits eligibility, elections, waivers, deductions, and vendor records match?
• Are required workplace notices current for your locations?
• Are handbook acknowledgments and employee changes signed, stored, and easy to retrieve?

Do not rely on memory: or scattered spreadsheets: to manage people processes. Build a repeatable system and keep one reliable source of truth.

Documentation is protection.

This checklist is a practical starting point, not legal advice. Requirements can vary by location and situation.

🛑 You're not behind. You're on a plateau. And that's actually a good thing.

Career plateaus get a bad reputation. But the truth? Every great career has them. The difference between people who break through and people who stay stuck comes down to three strategic moves:

MOVEMENT 1: EXPAND LATERALLY, NOT JUST UP
If the promotion isn't coming, what can you learn? Cross-train with another department. Take on a stretch project. Build a skill adjacent to your role. The 2026 job market rewards T-shaped professionals: deep expertise in one area, broad knowledge in several.

MOVEMENT 2: FIND YOUR "CAREER CAPSTONE"
Identify one significant project, process improvement, or initiative you can own this quarter. Something you can point to in 6 months and say: "I led that." Plateaus feel stagnant when you can't see progress. A capstone project creates visible, measurable momentum.

MOVEMENT 3: CHANGE YOUR FEEDBACK LOOP
If you're not getting feedback, you're flying blind. Schedule a skip-level conversation with your manager's manager. Ask: "What skills would make the biggest impact on this team?" The answer reveals exactly where the organization is heading: and how you can align.

💡 THE HR INSIDER TRUTH
Plateaus often look like a "you" problem when they're actually a "structural" problem. Sometimes the organization simply doesn't have room for upward mobility right now. That's not a failure: it's data. Use it to decide: grow here, or grow elsewhere.

📌 THE BOTTOM LINE
A plateau is not a dead end. It's a regrouping point. What you do from here determines your next peak.

💡 The difference between a "good" resume and a "hire-me" resume? It's not what you think.

Most people think it's about listing more skills or adding more keywords. But the real secret is something most candidates overlook entirely.

Here's the #1 gap we see at Wordsmith Resume:

📌 EVIDENCE OVER SKILLS

A typical resume says: "Skilled project manager with strong leadership abilities."

A hire-me resume says: "Led a cross-functional team of 12 to deliver a $2.3M project 3 weeks ahead of schedule, reducing operational costs by 18%."

See the difference? One is a claim. The other is proof.

🔍 THE HR INSIDER LENS
As a Senior HR Professional, I can tell you: recruiters scan for evidence, not adjectives. Every bullet point should answer the question: "So what? What happened because of you?"

📋 THE 3-QUESTION TEST
Before you submit your resume, ask yourself:

1️⃣ Does this bullet point describe a responsibility or a result?
2️⃣ Can I quantify the impact? (dollars, percentages, time saved, people led)
3️⃣ Would a recruiter in my industry immediately understand the value?

If you answered "no" to any of the above, it's time for a rewrite.

📌 THE BOTTOM LINE
Your resume isn't a job description. It's a sales document. And the best sales documents lead with proof, not promises.

Your internal job title is for your payroll record. Your resume title is for your career growth.

If your current title is something vague like "Operations Specialist" or "Office Manager," you might be invisible to recruiters searching for specific leadership or technical expertise.

The Applicant Tracking System (ATS) isn't looking for vague descriptions. It is looking for alignment.

Here is how you reframe without being misleading:

Instead of "Office Manager," try "Operations & Facility Manager | Process Improvement Lead."

Instead of "Specialist," use a descriptor that reflects your actual output, like "Client Success Strategy Lead."

Reframing is about clarity, not creativity. It tells the hiring manager exactly what you do before they even read your first bullet point. Stop letting a generic title cap your earning potential.

AI can write words. It can't write proof.

Hiring managers are already drowning in generic, AI-generated resumes. If yours looks like a bot wrote it, don't be surprised when a bot rejects it.

AI lacks the nuance to capture your unique human value. It doesn't understand the "why" behind your wins or how to position your expertise to solve a specific business problem.

A human strategist knows how to tell your story in a way that builds trust and authority.

Your career is too important to leave to an algorithm.

Get the human touch your career deserves.

DM "RESUME" to fix your positioning and finally get noticed.
