Books are open for 2027!

Now accepting hospital and birth center or home birth clients working with a midwife.

Are you or someone you know in the Detroit area looking for more support during pregnancy, birth, postpartum or even loss?

Having the right doula can be all the support you need. Doulas can provide many types of support like community resources, education, emotional and physical. Support looks different everyone and no two pregnancies are the same so it’s important to explore all your options and be very transparent about what you do, don’t or aren’t sure you want during your birth with your doula.

Belly binding has been a part of postpartum traditions all over the world for thousands of years. Unique belly binding techniques can be found in the birth traditions of Africa, Malaysia, Japan, and Latin America.

Many of these traditions use their own unique tying techniques. Such as the knotted bengkung bind from Malaysia, the sarashi wrap from Japan and faja stemming from several different cultures in Latin America. They all however, serve a similar purpose to provide physical and emotional support during the postpartum period.

Bengkung belly binding technique uses a long strip of cloth to wrap around the abdomen from the hips to the ribcage. Women are traditionally wrapped as soon after birth as possible, ideally on day five and then worn for 40 days or longer as needed. The Bengkung belly binding technique is rooted in Malaysian culture for the postpartum woman. The best time to do this is within the first 6 weeks after birth. This helps things move back in place more easily. It is recommended that the bind be worn for up to 12 hours and then taken off for 12 hours. #BellyBind #PostpartumCare #BengkungTechnique

This is Mikah. Excuse me 🗣️Midwife Mikah! She adds to the small number of black midwives in the state of Michigan. (She’s the 10th to be exact)

After our training Mama Toni washed and prayed over her hands and we got to bear witness. What a blessing it is to have elders and community! We see you Mikah! May you catch nations and pass on our ancestral wisdom!

I’ve spent the last 5 days at @detroitmidwiferyschool for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Disaster Preparedness for birth and Midwife Assistant Training.

I met some beautiful spirits, while reconnecting with others. Amazing things are happening when the women gather. Prayers are being answered, wisdom is shared, sister wounds are healed, networks are being woven, bonds are being formed, legacy is being created. LEGACY! We all have one individually and collectively the legacy of black midwives will live on!

Whew! I’m still processing…..
