1: Maile is not just a single species. There are so many Maile variations but the one most associated with Kaua’i is Maile Lauli’i. These species are finite resources that take years to grow. It’s important to harvest properly and sparingly in order to preserve these species for future generations.

2: Hayley Walcher, born and raised on Kaua’i has spent many years cultivating native plants through her work in conservation. She shares about the challenges that face our forests, and native lei plants in our latest blog post at the link in our bio.

3: Every year native plants like Maile are over harvested or improperly harvested. This leads to a decline in species resilience over time and contributes to its slow disappearance. Following in suit of the Merrie Monarch Festivals recent moratorium on harvesting wild native species, we also encourage folks to start growing their own native garden. Due to climate change and years of over harvesting, our forests need a break. Get in touch with Pono endorsed nurseries or reach out to conservation organizations to learn about how you can get native plant starters.

4: Sanitizing tools and gear help stop the spread of pathogens between plants. Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death is still a threat to our native forests. Make sure to always sanitize your tools before and after harvesting in wild areas and get proper permits before harvesting.

5: Lei materials and intentions can be very personal. Hayley uses Uala, a’ali’i and Kupukupu to create a lei po’o full of plants that she deeply admires for not only their physical beauty but also the relationship she has fostered by cultivating them.

6: Maile lei are such a meaningful gift to receive because making it is a labor of love. Maile is a native plant prized for its scent and spiritual meanings but over the years has been commercialized as a standard for weddings, graduations, and special events. Our wild Maile populations now suffer from pathogens, improper and over harvesting, and extreme weather impacts. Made in Los Angeles, these shirts are cut + sewn from our design. Some designs run across the sleeves, which means each sleeve has to be printed before the shirt is even sewn together. It’s a more complicated process, but those little details are what make them so special.
