2026 marks 32 years since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda — a period where more than one million people, overwhelmingly Tutsi, along with Hutu and others who opposed the violence, were killed in less than three months.

Women. Children. Families. People murdered in churches, in their communities, and in many cases by their own neighbors. The violence was merciless, gruesome, and seemingly endless — with the world largely watching from a distance.

When McCombs first presented Rwanda as an option for our global trip, my knowledge of the country was mostly shaped by Hotel Rwanda and what I had learned about the genocide. I knew Rwanda through the lens of tragedy, but I quickly realized there was so much more to understand.

The history alone made this trip an easy choice, but the more I learned, the more amazed I became by Rwanda’s resilience, vision, and transformation. In just a few decades, Rwanda has worked to rebuild, stabilize, and reimagine itself — becoming one of the most talked-about examples of progress, innovation, cleanliness, safety, and business growth on the African continent.

From its push toward digital payments and sustainability to its investment in technology, infrastructure, and the next generation of innovation, Rwanda is building something incredibly intentional.

It would probably take me weeks to fully explain how inspiring this country is — not just because of what it has overcome, but because of what it is becoming.

I left Rwanda with a deeper respect for its people, its history, and its future. And I look forward to continuing to learn from, support, and hopefully one day invest in the future of such an incredible country. taken in Kigali, Rwanda by @workthatcass
