👣 Day 2 of the Everest Base Camp trek, May 18 - from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, a key acclimatization point at 3,440 m (11,290 ft). It was a beautiful sunny start to the day for this long hike through tons of lovely fields and valleys down by the beautiful Dudh Koshi river.

We officially entered the magnificent Sagarmatha National Park - the park that is home to Mt. Everest, or Sagarmatha (Goddess of the Sky) in Nepali. And we learned that apparently we traveled into the future because the park was established in 2033 and it is now 2082, according to the Nepali calendar :-D.

After a yummy lunch by the river, we approached the famous Hillary suspension bridge, one of the tallest suspension bridges in Nepal. Still getting used to the suspension bridges and their sway in the wind...I moved quickly to try and get that part over with.

Of course, wouldn't be a proper Himalayan bridge crossing without having to wait for some animal traffic to come through :-D. After the bridge, the ascent to Namche was super steep with nearly another 2 hours uphill until we finally made it to the little town of Namche, our home for the next 2 nights. Unfortunately the clouds didn't let us see the majestic mountains in the front until our loop back through on the way back!

🌄🥾Re-live the trek with me day by day...

Day 1)
Let's rewind back to May 17, day 1 of the trek, when we made our way from Kathmandu to Lukla via the world's most dangerous airport and then trekked from Lukla to Phakding for our first night at a lodge in the Himalayas.

Yes, getting on this tiny propeller plane out of Kathmandu was scary. But it felt like the pilots must've landed on that super short runway Lukla thousands of times, as we had a smooth touchdown even despite a few clouds that blocked the views of some of the Himalayan giants.

The first part of the trek was relatively easy and mostly downhill, surrounded by lush green mountains and valleys. At this point, we're all amazed at the abundance of Buddhist stupas and colorful prayer wheels along the way, and are learning about the importance of "left side safe side (good luck), right side suicide (bad luck)" when it comes to walking by these beautiful structures.

We start getting a feel for what it's going to be like to encounter traffic on the trail - in the form of donkeys, porters, and a few other tourists - and we get to cross our first suspension bridge right before the village of Phakding.

We get to have our first lunch at one of the many teahouses along the way and after walking in the rain for the last hour, we experience our first night at a cozy lodge right by the river.

And for dinner, we get to introduced to the national Nepali staple of all trekkers - dhal bat. A mix of rice, dal (lentils), and curried and pickled veggies. As the locals here say, "Dal Bhat Power 24 hour (no toilet no shower)" :-) The beginning of our two-week carb loading sesh before the big race.

🏔🥾🇳🇵 Everest Marathon and Everest Base Camp trek - the most magical trip of a lifetime!! ✨️

On May 29, on the 72nd anniversary of the first Mt. Everest summit by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, I somehow completed the World's highest marathon from Mt. Everest base camp to Namche Bazaar!

🏃‍♀️ 11 hours of walking on super rocky terrain, running when possible, and tons of uphill trekking with amazing views and now the sorest legs I've ever had!! Definitely the hardest 42km to conquer despite an overall downhill trek...especially the first part at high attitude and the last 10k being pretty much straight uphill but the views made it all worth it.

So cool to be one of the first two Czechs ever to finish the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon ! 🇨🇿 (The other Czech lady placed 3rd overall in the foreign women category, absolutely amazing representation of CZ Adéla Wegschmiedová 🤩👏)

But the best part has definitely been the entire two week trek up to base camp with an amazing group of other runners and waking up to snow on our first morning at base camp! 😍❄️
