When BBC World News describes you as “The Diva of the Sudanese Desert” it makes it hard to not impressed. Since the release of “View From Somewhere” in 2011 Sudenese musician Amira Kheir has firmly cermented herself as a voice of a new generation.

Amira music offers her listeners a wealth life, experience and tradition. You're pulled into a world that's vast but also intimate, and you're free to meander through the music and the lyrics, savouring every moment.

There is a uniqueness to Amira's music that contributes greatly to the rich musical heritage of the distinctive Saharan blues, think Fatou Seidi Ghali, Mariem Hassan, Malouma, and Fatoumata Diawara.

"I’ve been singing my whole life...I grew up with Sudanese music so it’s very meaningful to me. My singing taps into different Sudanese traditions but it’s not traditional in itself. I’ve reworked it so now it has bits of jazz, bits of my life and others. What comes out in my music is an adoption of what my family, my culture, my background passed on to me. I see it as spiritual, for as human beings we are all spiritual." - Amira Kheir

Jazz in The Gardens came to the Food Exchange at New Covent Garden Market today and we were treated to a magnificent hour of entertainment by the Nnandi Nnachi-Cole Quartet.

An audience from the market and our local community saw four amazing young musicians perform in a pretty unique jazz setting (!) as part of the festival organised by Nine Elms charity @worldheartbeat - they nourished their souls and minds with great music, and their bodies with 5 A DAY thanks to fruit and juices supplied by market firms @ddpltd and @squishjuices

Meet the quartet:

Nnamdi Nnachi-Cole is a young pianist trained at the esteemed Julian Joseph Jazz Academy. He is already turning heads and attracting positive waves as one of the newest emerging stars on the London jazz scene.

South London musician Ellis Gates has been crowned Young Drummer of the Year, securing his place in drumming history at the Zildjian Young Drummer contest, testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication. He’s heavily influenced by Roy Haynes, Art Blakey and Tony Williams.

Hass Richards is making waves on the London jazz scene and regularly performs at esteemed jazz venues across the city, including World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens, Vortex and 606 Club, bringing a thoughtful, groove-driven approach shaped by both self-discovery and formal jazz mentorship at the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy.

Joe Walker is an up-and-coming alto-saxophonist known for his bold sound. Joe also leads his own jazz quartet, honouring the legacy of John Coltrane’s sound, and has played at venues across London, including at the EFG London Jazz Festival. Joe currently studies at the internationally acclaimed Trinity Laban Conservatoire.

Jazz in The Gardens is a jazz festival running through the summer in and around Embassy Gardens. It features a mix of global stars and tomorrow’s trailblazers, and bursts with talent, interest, energy and outstanding performances.

Through working with incredible London-based jazz musicians, Sahana has built a new conversation that explores this sacred music tradition, helping to release it from preconceived expectations. The freedom that is entrenched in jazz has enabled Sahana to create a show that allows her audiences to listen to the heartfelt lyricism of Bengali music, one that’s rooted in tradition, open to all, and brings a playful and intimate conversation to the stage.

Extraordinary Wandsworth Women gives space to some of Wandsworth's women from sports to the arts, the book opens up this history in a way that is as captivating as it is inspiring. A beautiful moment from our recent Instrumental Soirée

Over the past two weeks, World Heart Beat has been alive with music performances from celebrating Windrush, to Big Band and 51st Band concerts, Gig bands, Latin and New Orleans rhythms, music exams, songwriters concerts @worldheartbeatcafe performances in care homes and in the community, our joyful Heart Beat Picnic and our our first ever #openmic tomorrow . Amid all this activity, these intimate evenings remind us of the power of being a community and of happiness, sweetness and togetherness.
