So who are we?
WOO is a charity based in Randalstown forest, Northern Ireland, and is the country’s only bird of prey & exotic animal conservation centre. Our hardworking and dedicated team strive to benefit education and conservation within NI. We have indoor and outdoor displays full of wonderful animals, complete with a shop, play area and services. So why not come along and visit us sometime? ☺️

Important Information About Our “Owl Experiences”

Unfortunately, at the moment we cannot guarantee that this experience will be available. I have recently broken my arm, and our other fully trained keeper who was able to provide these experiences is now volunteering on a part-time basis, so we cannot guarantee which days they will be available.

You are very welcome to ask at reception when you arrive if an Owl Experience is available that day, but please don’t be disappointed if we are unable to offer one. This is only a temporary situation while I recover and we train additional members of staff to provide this service again as soon as possible.

What Iis an Owl Experience?

An Owl Experience is not an owl-holding experience.

The experience is a personal 5–10 minute meet-and-greet with one of our educational owls for up to four people at a time. During which, one of our experienced keepers will introduce you to the owl, tell you about the species, explain the bird’s individual story, answer your questions, and, where appropriate, provide opportunities for photographs.

The cost is £35 per experience, in addition to normal admission charges.

Can I hold an owl?

Not everyone will be permitted to handle one of our owls or other birds of prey, and this includes many adults as well as children. Any decision to allow handling can only be made after meeting visitors on the day.

Our birds of prey have extremely strong feet, razor-sharp talons and powerful beaks. Although they are well-trained educational birds, they are still birds of prey and can behave unpredictably. Likewise, visitors may become nervous or have medical or other conditions that we are unaware of, which could increase the risk of an accident.
Our first responsibility is always the safety and welfare of our birds, our visitors and our staff.

Can I pick my bird?

Unfortunately not.

Birds of prey develop strong bonds with their handlers, so the owl, hawk, falcon or eagle available for an experience will depend entirely on which trained handler is working on the day of your visit.

Sauroman our Great Horned Owl is enjoy the lovely weather!

Adult Great Horned owls range in length from 43 to 64 cm, with an average of 55 cm, and have a wingspan of 91 to 153 cm! These beautiful birds are native to the Subarctic of North America.

They are native to the Americas and are incredinly adaptable and can be found in trees that border deciduous, coniferous, and mixed forests, tropical rainforests, pampas, prairie, mountainous areas, deserts, subarctic tundra, rocky coasts, mangrove swamp forests, and some urban areas.

Great Horned Owl's are some of the earliest nesting, courting from October to December and mating from December to January. It was thought they were monogamous for breeding, however, it has been found a male may mate with two females simultaneously. Pairs often will mate year after year, though will only be around one another for courtship, breeding and raising their young.

Meet Raj the Indian Scops owl!

Did you know that not all owls are as large as we think? The Indian Scops Owl only grows to about 20-25 centimeters tall with a wingspan of 60-66 centimeters!

These birds are native too South Asia, being found in forests, woodlands, and riverine forests where they will eat small rodents, lizards, small birds, and even eat bugs and their larvae.

During nesting, the female Indian Scops Owl will lay 3-5 eggs in holes or hollow trees, though sometimes will nest in abandoned buildings as well.

See our Harley the Eurasian Eagle owl sitting down!

Did you know owls can sit down with their feet sticking out when they are comfortable? Harley here is quite relaxed sitting under one of his favourite bushes.

Eurasian Eagle owl's are one of the largest owl species in the world, they are found in mountainous and rocky areas, often nearby woodlands or wetlands of Europe and Asia.

These owls will breed on cliffs amongst the rocks and concealed locations. Their clutches will range fromg 2-4 eggs that are laid at intervals and hatch at different times. During nesting, the female will sit on the nest incubating the eggs whilst the male will hunt and bring food for her. They will raise their young after hatching for around 5 months.

Meet Lida our Steppe Eagle!

Steppe Eagle's will migrate depending on the year, during spring for breeding they can be found in Russia Kazakhstan and Mongolia, whereas for their winter migration they will be found in sub-Saharan Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and South Asia.

These birds are most adapted for dry open spaces, typically semi-deserts and savannas, which is where they will typically eat smaller mammals and even carrion.

Steppe Eagle's are the only type of eagle that will nest primarily on the ground! They will usually have 1-3 eggs in a clutch and in successful nests one or two eagle's will fledge.

Kookie the Laughing Kookabura showing off the gorgeous blue in her wings!

Did you know that Laughing Kookbura's are actually part of the King Fisher sub family? They are native to Australia and are being introduced to New Zealand and Tasmania.

Laughing Kookabura's are monogamous, retaining the same partner for life, often being accompanied by up to five of their non-breeding off-spring from previous years who will help defend their territory, which is where you may hear them laughing!

The laughing call these birds make is a territorial call to defend their territory, often times several Laughing Kookabura's can be making it a time.
