One of the coolest things last year was Afghan Punk Zine being part of DAZED MENA 100 @dazedmiddleeast

The year was too chaotic to properly acknowledge it but it meant everything that @mayaabuali gave me the space to speak on what forever burns in my heart.

Since 2018 (when the magazine was founded) so much has changed but my (political) grief, rage, sense of liberatory connectivity and the need to unveil the illusion of separateness never have.

What’s Afghan Punk Rock anyway?! I dunno I can’t give an essentialist answer. All I know is that part of the answer is a structural observation. Being Afghan is to be clever enough to bend the rules and limitations placed upon us again and again and again and again. When five doors close, we smash a window and we walk through. We always find a way to freedom.

Shoutout to everyone who shaped this magazine!! New stuff coming this week 🌹

SARKASH سرکش UNDERGROUND TAKE-OVER

Ahead of Sarkash سرکش Underground on 1 August we dive into the festival celebrating rap, trap, and experimental sounds from Afghanistan, Balochistan, and Kashmir. Sarkash is dari for „rebellious“ and “defiant”.

In the first half, co-founders Zolfar Hassib (@jet.asti) and Armeghan Taheri (@worldwideweb300) reflect on the political significance of music at a time when it is banned in Afghanistan, while also showcasing the artists featured in the festival’s line-up. Later, Zolfar is joined by Farhad Bal0ch (@farhadbal0ch), who gives us a sneak peek of their set, weaving together and connecting the worlds they carry into their sound. Enjoy!

Introducing co-founder ارمغان. Armeghan Taheri is a writer, artist and cultural worker based in Berlin. She is the founder of Afghan Punk @afghanpunkzine , a magazine and platform for art and political organising, the co-founder of Sarkash سرکش Underground, and part of Parallelgesellschaft @parallelgesell , a post-German artist collective. Across her artistic practice in language, image and projects that bring people into relation, Armeghan explores how we can create conditions where we can (re)envision ourselves otherwise.

About the meaning of Sarkash she says: at a time when music is banned in Afghanistan and with it one of the most fundamental expressions of human life and our capacity to imagine ourselves, Sarkash is a privilege, a sound and an echo of protest across past, present and future. It is a refusal to accept hopelessness by fighting for other ways of imagining our collective life.

Introducing the team of Sarkash سرکش Underground born from a collective impulse and shared vision to make something exist that wasn’t there before and to do it on our own terms.

For us, it is a defiant act of imagination, necessity and care for our music and for what it means to create, to transform, to resist, and to remain deeply human.
Together, we’re building the kind of festival we’d been searching for - and soon, it belongs to you.

From us, to you.

Over the coming days, you’ll get to know the team behind Sarkash: @jet.asti @worldwideweb3000 @baranrosemah @xrt00 @fairyintheflesh

Stay tuned 🖤

Last year the magazine moved from a symbolic to a physical social space (although I hate the
word “space” by now). Many people whose hands I deeply appreciate came together to find
pathways of (re)mapping and reimagining our existence in Berlin despite the pain of imagining
yourself in a place you probably would never have chosen voluntarily if it wasnt for the
exploitation structures.

We asked ourselves: what other modes of resilience can lead to alliances, safety, and slow
transformation? And how can these modes emerge through lived, practical forms of communion
that, even if just in small ways, help undo the constant states of survival and the collective (often
internalized) fragmentation we carry? How do emancipatory narratives take shape in the real world beyond the existence of the magazine and its political messaging?

The result was the project „Afghan Punk City“ an art project in Berlin for young adults that attempted to
counter systematically imposed mental, spiritual, and physical entrapment through cultural heritage. These practices are mainly bodily and therefore experimental - not trying to impose a fixed idea, but about creating collaboratively, carefully, slowly and seeing what happens.

We used dance and cooking as forms of ritualistic communion while also opening artistic
movement for social and political self-organization. Through simple collective acts (despite the
art world’s insistence on reframing them as complicated gestures): critical
cartography, attan dance, and cooking and eating together became our ways of building trust,
joy, and alliances countering fragmentation narratives.

Special thanks for this incredible poster by the talent @lotsofbroth (more posters dropping)

And lots and lots and lots of lovely caring people with strong hearts that exist in this world
despite it all @iznezz @jet.asti @atibelll_ @attan_berlin , @mariam_mumtaz12 @hanif_freestyler_official hanif_freestyler_official and sahar (who i can’t tag!!) and many others!!l

More loveliness from our Afghan Punk City project cooking in the space of Bilgisaray <3 where our ustad @mariam_mumtaz12 led us to cook in Bilgisaray.

Some thoughts on food and eating: I feel uncomfortable sharing food these days when it’s now more visible than ever that starving people is a tactic of the empire and who gets to be starved as we move on in our lives with 500 options of different pastas. I am not holier than thou nor attaching a counter productive shame-based approach to it, but I am just having grievances around everything that food and eating has been recently charged with from where we are located. This includes the recent silly fascination of art and culture with food, and the pretentiousness and arrogance of reframing communal eating as particularly conceptual. In one event with @migrantifa_berlin on anti-imperial resistance, one of the artists @sarenkita said something very important: the problem isn’t aesthetic in and of itself, but the aesthetics cannot just stay mere aesthetics. That is so true. And this, by extension, applies to anything within the arts. The imagery cannot just stay imagery. These tensions will never resolve fully, but we can be conscious of it.

In this sense, may we always remember that scarcity is the empires biggest myth.

About the space that hosted us kindly Bilgisaray is a neighborhood center for everyone-an open space for solidarity and a site for political change. They offer a neighborhood kitchen where people can cook and eat together free of charge. Bilgisaray is financed by donations. If you would like to become a supporter, please check them out.

@lotsofbroth art work yet again - you are talented beyond words thanks for this incredible poster!!

And another round of thanks to lovely caring people @iznezz @jet.asti @atibelll_ @attan_berlin @mariam_mumtaz12 @hanif_freestyler_official @zahragardi1 and many others 🌹🕯️
