Welcoming my first modern Grand Seiko to the collection! Was not easy tracking down this early model with the double signed dial. It was tempting to just go for the SBGW231 especially since there were several at good prices, but I knew it wasn’t what I really wanted and would always lust for this 035 instead. Some great features of the 035 are that they mostly were originally sold with this beautiful tapering BOR bracelet that wears so much nicer than the normal GS bracelet. It also has a deep fired blue seconds hand instead of the regular steel one. Several more details too but I’ll save them for later. Seems like quite small changes but they sum up to a watch that wears very differently. Part 2 of my submission for the #mywatchkakixperience ❤️ Prior to this, whenever I had any issues with modern pieces I would just bring them to the brand service centres to have it looked over under warranty. Well, I felt screwed with my Seiko this time. It was a rude awakening for me that movement health is very important when it comes to vintage for long term longevity of your piece. I learnt that independent repair shops are your saviours for these grandpas. The negative experience with my Lord Matic didn’t deter me though, I had caught the vintage bug bad partly due to the wearable case sizes and more palatable price points. The part about vintage that really amazed me though was the engineering feats that brands achieved back in the day due to intense competition between the Swiss and Japanese at observatory competitions. Hi-beat is one of my favourite features because I enjoy listening to that rapid fire machine gun ticking noise and the butter smooth sweep of the seconds hand! I also really enjoy looking at exposed gear trains on vintage movements, especially manual winding chronographs since they are more complex. I could name some parts of the movement like the balance wheel, pallet fork, balance bridge etc but I could never tell you in what order should they be reassembled and what roles they play. It is with this awesome initiative started by @mywatchkaki and @timenmotions that I hope to be able to understand how a movement all comes together under the expert guidance of sifu Patrick! 👏🏻 Honestly it would truly be an awesome life changing horological experience to be able to learn first hand from him about the inner workings of mechanical watches and most importantly getting hands on with an actual movement under his guidance. There has never been a more appropriate time for me to put this post up. Here’s my submission for the #mywatchkakixperience! The first mechanical piece I owned was a Sevenfriday P3. What drew me to it was mainly the industrial design and cutout on the dial revealing some inner workings of the movement that caught my eye. Of course, I had no idea at the time what movement it used and how it worked. I just thought it was really cool that a little machine was ticking away on my wrist. The only info I had about it was from the shop assistant who told me it had 40 hours of “battery” each time I wore it. 😅 Fast forward to 2023 when I started taking the hobby more seriously and irresponsibly spending way too much 💰, it came to a point where I had to stop and reconsider what is a value buy. With some strong influence from the awesome guys over at @mywatchkaki I decided to venture into the world of vintage with the brand that started it all for most collectors, Seiko. I bought a 1968 Lord Matic for RM600 and all seemed great! My joy was short lived however as I discovered it was running slow and had an abnormally short power reserve. … To be continued in Part 2! The black lacquered Santos Dumont in steel released during Watches & Wonders 2022. Finally got to see it after the novelties for this year (2023!) came out and several rounds of price hikes, which has dulled the excitement slightly to be honest. However, it does look really stunning in the flesh and trust me when I say pictures don’t do this thing justice. Gonna be interesting to see if people will go for the “latest and greatest” 2023 models over this one. Will just continue waiting for mine and more price increases I guess. Feels like an #NWA all over again with this one. Only managed to get a week of wrist time when I first got it before going away for a full service to rectify the average timekeeping. Glad that it’s running much better now at roughly -5s/day. Have to say special thanks to @edmchee and @chrono.path for sorting it out for me! It will now live on this baby blue calf strap custom made by @mf_strap.
