We took gas prices personally.
Our founder went around the Bay Area checking prices at gas stations against WorthStop, Google Maps and GasBuddy.
For Regular, WorthStop was within a penny of the recorded price at 62 of 68 stations. That's 91%.
Google Maps: 56 of 68.
GasBuddy: 50 of 68.
And when the prices were off, how far off were they?
Across those same 68 stations, WorthStop's prices differed from the recorded price by just 0.74 cents per gallon on average. Less than a penny.
Google Maps: 1.62 cents.
GasBuddy: 2.72 cents.
WorthStop's average price error was 54% smaller than Google Maps' and 73% smaller than GasBuddy's.

That cheap gas screenshot has been forwarded more times than it has been updated.

Before making the detour: check the date, match your fuel grade, and check the cash, card or membership conditions. Add the extra driving to the comparison too.

We ran SF to San Jose through WorthStop with 10 gallons of Regular and a 25 MPG car.

With time value off, ARCO at 5012 Stevenson Blvd in Fremont came out 36 cents below Gold Rush at 3751 Lafayette St in Santa Clara. The estimated totals were $50.98 and $51.34, including the fuel purchase and detour fuel. Displayed detours: 13 and 5 minutes.

Then we set time to $20/hour. The pick changed to ARCO at 470 Ralston Avenue in Belmont. Its $52.65 estimated total includes that time value. Fremont came to $55.44 on the same basis.

Same route, same car, same fuel amount. Apparently the clock gets a vote.

Sept. 2, 2026 planner check, around 1:40 p.m. Pacific. Card-price records were 22 hours old for Fremont, 21 for Gold Rush and 17 for Belmont. Best available price, no Costco or Sam's Club membership, 8 mi / 20 min detour cap, 14 gal tank. Detour minutes are rounded. These are planner estimates, not receipts. Check the posted price before buying.
