It’s taken me a while to post this one because I’m still processing it.

Belize didn’t exactly give us the permit trip we had imagined, but the tarpon fishing was absolutely insane. Jessie and I both landed migratory fish, and every day seemed to bring a new mix of hope, heartbreak, chaos, and pure excitement.

So many laughs, happy tears and struggles. So many moments where we wondered…did that just happen? And maybe a touch of…I’m glad that happened…but I don’t ever want to do it again 🤣🫣

Feeling incredibly lucky to have shared this experience with you @mtmidge406 . These are the kinds of trips that stay with you long after you get home.

P.S. I do NOT recommend fighting a big tarpon in 800 feet of rough water outside a reef. Zero stars. Would not do again.

What a bad ass day today celebrating Women in Fly Fishing thanks to @queenoftheroadsoda and @wayfinderbeer for the location and planning.

Huge shoutout to @worthwadingfor and @sea2sage for their 101 presentation, and @miasriverkitchen for her overview of guiding and river preparedness.

Today we were proud to honor these women and all those who showed up at this event hosted by NWFFO. We had our very own @gillsandgalspdx represented as well as the @stoneflymaidensff with a strong showing! It really was an amazing community event. NWFFO is all about building and supporting community, and this event was all about that.

Thank you to all who showed up and thank you to our guides who supported this event with donated trips and working behind the scenes to promote and help where they could

That’s a wrap on my third and final Fly Tying Sunday at Fin & Fire this winter 🧡

And dang… ya’ll crushed it.

From dialing in baitfish profiles to stepping way outside your tying comfort zones with crabs, I’m so proud of everyone who showed up! Especially you soft hackle loyalists who finally picked up some bucktail, flash and a hook bigger than a size 12. I see you. 😉

Thank you to everyone who showed up, asked questions, laughed, drank coffee (or beer), and trusted me to nerd out about fly patterns for a few hours. Watching confidence build at the vise is one of my favorite things.

My first tuskie on fly, sight-cast in shallow Australian water on a cheeseburger crab from my friend @tothegills !

A neon bullet straight to the fly, an angry eat, and a freight-train pull where the reel is basically irrelevant — just set, hang on, hand line that b**ch and hope you win the battle! Couldn’t have done it without @aussieflyfisher @chris.gw.heath step by step directions (and remarkable patience with all my missed casts and eats 🤪).

Wild power, brilliant colors, and a moment I’ll remember forever. Thank you for these epic pictures Chris!

Still buzzing from a week in Australia chasing anything willing to eat a fly. Permit, tuskies, GT… every day and every flat felt like a new shot at something incredible; opportunity around every corner.

Wild fish, wild water, and the kind of chaos that makes you feel alive: salt spray, bloody fingers, blown shots, a few perfect eats and the best crew you could ask for with @aussieflyfisher at @thecapelodge. Grateful for every moment out there. Like I always say, if it’s not a good time, it’s a good story — but this trip was absolutely both.

Definitely the most “nat-geo” moment from the trip. Following this giant oceanic manta ray around while it was summersault feeding. And no I wasn’t trying to catch it! There was a school of big golden trevally on it. Wasn’t ever able to pull one of them off, but got about a dozen queen fish trying! by @worthwadingfor

Still can’t get over our week up in Cape York.

We fished it all; endless flats, creeks, beaches that looked straight out of a dream and reefs packed with life. Every cast felt like a new species waiting to surprise us (we ended up finding 20 different ones!). We saw TONS of anak permit with countless shots every day, black spot tusk fish that looked like neon blue tanks cruising over red rocks, bastards who were truly bastards, queen fish, GT’s and more.

But his place is so much more than the fish, though they were pretty unreal. It’s the variety, the people, the views and that wild feeling you only get somewhere remote and untouched like this. Dingos running down the beach, manta rays doing backflips, kangaroos, sharks, falcons, pilot whales, dolphins… you name it.

Huge thanks to the @thecapelodge team and @aussieflyfisher crew for making it happen. Couldn’t have asked for a better bunch and couldn’t have done it without our amazing guides @chris.gw.heath @james_sinnamon and @cooperrwatsonn .

What a week. Living rent free in my head for all time. Can’t wait to go back.
