A visit to Joostenburg's vineyards (or a virtual visit via social media scroll) tells the story of their organic philosophy. With no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers in the vineyards, they focus on building healthy soils, biodiversity, and balance across their mixed farm of vines, livestock and produce.That same care carries into the cellar - natural fermentation and a lighter touch throughout.Five generations of Myburghs have farmed this land between Paarl and Stellenbosch, and it shows in everyone working it: the vineyard team, the kitchen, the bistro, the deli. Organic since day 1. Org de Rac was established on the ethos of organic farming since their first vines were planted in 2002. This Swartland farm has never known another way. Natural compost, sea-bird manure, cover crops and wasps released to deal with the pests are some of the ways they farm without artificial fertilisers and pesticides. As a result, the land buzzes with life - small critters like ladybirds, earthworms and bird flourish. In the cellar, the philosophy follows through. Wild fermentation. Barely any added sulphur. Gentle handling. When snails show up in the vineyards, Avondale sends in the ducks!A posse of glossy Pekin ducks - known as Jonty's Ducks, and even honoured with their own wine - heads out on patrol each weekday morning across the vineyards. Together with wasps that handle the mealybug, they're just part of how this farm works with nature rather than against it.Diverse cover crops, a soil balancing system, a cellar built to take full advantage of nature, and an estate now fully powered by solar... The vineyards in South Africa may look ""asleep"" right now, but they're actually hard at work.Winter is a time of quiet transformation for farms. The vines are dormant and bare, but beneath the surface, important processes are underway. It's also the season to prune the vines. Most people study philosophy and then go looking for a job. Johan Reyneke went looking for a farm.While studying environmental ethics at Stellenbosch, he worked as a farm labourer on the side - on purpose, to learn wine farming from the soil up. When he took over his family's farm in the Polkadraai hills in 1998, he ran it on that ethic: no herbicides, no pesticides, no fungicides. In 2008, Reyneke became the first wine farm in South Africa certified biodynamic by Demeter, in addition to being certified organic.For Johan, it's not a marketing line.
