West Philadelphia Orchestra w/ Code: Blue FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 @mannysstatecollege @wpobrass brings the full force of Balkan brass to the stage, pulling from Romani brass traditions and Eastern European music while folding in jazz, funk, soul, and the sounds of Philadelphia. The band got its start in West Philly in 2006, initially playing parks, street festivals and neighborhood events. Nearly two decades later, their repertoire stretches from traditional Serbian and Macedonian music and Philly klezmer to New Orleans brass, free jazz, punk, soul, hip hop and ska, while incorporating original music. Opening the night is Code: Blue, a homegrown 8-piece roots blues, soul and R&B band. Code: Blue first emerged locally in the early 1990s, touring throughout Pennsylvania and appearing at festivals including Philadelphia’s Penn’s Landing Jambalaya Jam, Harrisburg’s Riverfront Arts Festival and the Johnstown Flood City Music Festival. The group reunited in 2023 and has been performing throughout the region again since. ALL AGES // Doors 7p Tickets on sale now — link in bio. by @wpobrass

⚡️ANNOUNCING⚡️ WEST PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 @mannysstatecollege Since 2006, @wpobrass has brought together the brass band traditions of the Balkans, Romani music, klezmer, New Orleans jazz, punk, and original compositions into a sound all their own. The Philadelphia ensemble has performed at festivals and venues throughout the United States and Europe, sharing bills with artists including Gogol Bordello, Antibalas, and Balkan Beat Box. With a lineup of eight to ten musicians featuring horns, accordion, strings, percussion, and vocals, the group is equally at home in concert halls, clubs, festivals, and street parades. Nearly two decades after forming, West Philadelphia Orchestra remains one of Philadelphia’s most distinctive and enduring ensembles. Funkrust has a ton of gigs in August (stay tuned) but here’s one we’re especially excited about—at the amazing outdoor sculpture park Opus 40 with a dream line up including West Philly Orchestra and Matt Moran’s Mountain Lions and Unicorn Brass Band, plus Balkan Dance instruction, produced by the Unicorn Bar’s Francesca Hoffman (and former Funkrust member!) by @wpobrass
I’m thrilled to be back in the producer chair for the return of Euphonia! A Brass & Balkan Festival - coming to the magical @officialopus40 on Saturday, August 22nd! 🎺✨ What an honor to be asked to curate a lineup celebrating the genre(s) I love most: Balkan & brass music. I'm super excited about this line-up, what a roster of all-stars, truly: 🔥 @funkrustbrassband (NYC): Highly danceable post-apocalyptic disco punk brass - all originals! 🔥 @wpobrass (Philadelphia, PA) - "Avant village folk brass band" blending traditional Eastern European Balkan and Romani music with American jazz, punk, and hip-hop influences. 🔥 Mountain Lions (NYC, mostly): Ecstatic dance music from the southern Balkans and Turkey, in an all-star lineup inspired by zurna and davul but purring and growling with 3 alto saxophones and drum. Featuring the incredible @mattmoinbk of @slavicsoulparty and members of @zlatneuste. 🔥 @unicornbrassband (Kingston, NY): A homegrown project close to my heart, featuring original pop & disco arrangements, some Balkan beats, New Orleans second line, and for this show, a very special debut (hint: we were inspired by @labiahead_band). Also featuring Balkan dance lessons courtesy of our regular @unicornkingston Balkan Night teacher, Noel Kropf (he's really so good, because of him I can lead a cocek and a kolo and a couple of others on my own now!) If you're looking to find some joy, this is the place. Bring the kiddos, the parents, this music is for everyone. Come dance with us! 🎉 Saturday, August 22 3PM Gates 3:30PM Balkan dance lesson 4-8PM Music Tickets: https://opus40.org/event/brass-festival/ (link in bio) by @wpobrass
