Between this World & the Next 2023–2024
For the @biennalesydney 2024 showing at the @mca_australia .
Tomorrow, the 10th of June is the last day to view this piece in person. Still very much in awe and lost for words as this is my biggest and most realised artwork to date. Thank you to the curators, the team at the Biennale and the MCA for your trust in my vision.

Serwah Attafuah’s digital creation unfolds in a near-future Ghana, drawing viewers into an Afrofuturistic vista contrasting colonial remnants with utopian hope. The narrative, propelled by burning slave castles, sinking colonial ships and formidable female warriors, weaves a tale that is both haunting and empowering. This work embodies Ghana’s matrilineal legacy, while addressing contemporary issues like e-waste dumping, symbolised by a bespoke frame crafted from e-waste and the incorporation of Sakawa, or ‘internet magic’. Responding to William Strutt’s Black Thursday, February 6th, 1851, also on display, Attafuah delves into West African history, land rights and climate impact on its indigenous communities, fostering a dialogue between historical reverence and visionary insight. Through imaginative storytelling, Attafuah challenges conventional viewpoints and incites refection, offering commentary on transcending historical bounds. Her avant-garde blend of cultural reflections with futuristic aesthetics establishes this work as a conversation between past legacies and speculative horizons, towards a reimagined future.

Commissioned by the Biennale of Sydney with generous assistance from Create NSW and the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.

Moving between visual and sonic forms, the artist questions dominant representations of identity and femininity, while imagining alternative worlds.

In Creation of My Metaverse (Between this World and the Next), the digital is contrasted with the physical. Dilapidated satellites coexist next to carved stone towers and pillars reminiscent of the ancient world. Planets lie on the ground, no longer in orbit, while two figures in poses echoing Michaelangelo’s Creation of Adam dominate the scene. These cherubic cyborgs are reflections of the artist herself, and by linking them back to one of the most recognizable moments in the history of art, Attafuah visually illustrates her experience as both an oil painter and a digital artist. Yet, in Creation of My Metaverse, it is the artist who is God; she carves out terrain, orchestrates where its light and shadow fall; in short, it is she who makes up all the rules.
Attafuah’s work, in its Rococo flair, stands out for its tantalising dialogue with art history and their eye for elegantly conceived compositions. In her work, techno-surrealistic landscapes are populated with characters drawn equally from science fiction as they are from worlds of 18th century painters Fragonard and Watteau. She equally stands as an highly important and visible artist opening up discussions and giving presence to empowering images of afro-futurist identity in the NFT space. These futurist conceptions all too often are figured as a dominantly white visual reality and Attafuah’s work stands as a rebuke to this dominant narrative. by @wrath_____

The idea of living within a metaverse isn't new for me. The cyber world has long been a refuge and a place of experimentation. In this talk, which delivers simultaneously from within a digital landcsape and live on stage, I shares how online places provide a place to exist and shape my identity. As metaverses become a more common part of our cyber reality, I argues that we shouldn't rely on others making the online worlds we'll inhabit but seek to create our own as acts of creative, cultural and individual expression.

RELIC 24 ⚔️
One of two new additions created for my ongoing series ‘History of Tomorrow’ for @photofestivalau 2024.

I started this series in late 2021 and it’s taken on many unexpected and exciting forms. From oil paintings, to 22 minted NFTs on @withfoundation to this large scale outdoor install part of the ‘Uncanny Valley’ in the Treasury Precinct in Melbourne.

Catalogue note:
(ed. 1/1) *Aether: Galaxy Goddess* is a sister piece to *Creation of My Metaverse (Between this World and the Next)*, which sold during the first Natively Digital sale. It explores themes of world building and personal empowerment as Serwah's digital 'reflection of self' embodies the Greek God Aether who was thought to be the god of the 'upper sky'. She lifts up planetary bodies amongst glittering golden structures. The purpose behind the piece is to show more of a personal connection to a metaverse/universe and how one can be empowered to take on the world, as it is always in one's reach. This piece was commissioned by collector, Paris Hilton. It reminded her of the connection between women and the universe, that the universe is divine and that the feminine spirit is sacred. The fact that a woman is portrayed at the center of everything in *Aether: Galaxy Goddess* was incredibly important to Paris. “Serwah is so innovative and creative. She shows the importance of femininity and the role it plays in the universe. Femininity, womanhood, and female empowerment are her main focuses and it’s stunning. There is deeper meaning hidden behind her work and it speaks volumes.”
