Yeah, yesterday at @ochosupper was special! I’m grateful to everyone who came out and experienced the stories behind my photographs from traveling through Cuba with @reglasoulcuba.

This started as a post about my 2025 portraits, but ADHD had other plans and now it spans 2023-2025 aka my time at REC Philly.

A @pecoconnect grant opened the doors to this amazing space and incredible creative community.

The lead image was captured by @ayookanon at my first REC event. I was nervous as hell, wondering if I belonged. The people there made it clear that I did.

They called REC a gym for creatives and through time and reps I got more comfortable with the machines and the studio space.

Grateful for the space, the people, and the growth.

Photowalks at BILD Expo with @brookeshaden and @sonyalpha

Brooke had an idea- she grabbed some long needles, lights, yarn, and “borrowed” someone’s tablecloth… then got to work.

Watching her create was incredible. This isn’t my usual style, but I learned so much from this session. She had an idea, tested it, scrapped it, and made something even better.

It affirmed my own process and reminded me to stay flexible. Sometimes the best shots come from letting go of the plan and following where the moment takes you.

Grateful for the inspiration and the chance to learn from artists like Brooke

This Juneteenth festival felt like a family reunion. It felt like love, it felt like a celebration, it felt like history.

There’s something powerful that happens when we gather together young and old(er) in unity. No drama, just love. That’s what this festival brought to Philly that’s what Nashirah does for so many.

Earlier this year I visited the Shared Vision exhibit at the African American Art Museum. A few pieces had me stop and stare for a while! These were portraits of us, our melanin shining through textured patterns that made us look majestic (slides 3-5)

Since then, a specific project has been in my head to celebrate our skin but I couldn’t quite see it clearly… until I came across Thandiwe’s art.

I met her at Bild and told her how much her work reignited my melanin project idea. She smiled and said, take your time, this art took 10 years to develop.”

Don’t ask me what I was pointing at or saying during this #movingportrait with @sonyalpha 😂

Right after this, I was interviewed by Sony and asked what one feature I’d like to see added to their cameras. In the moment, I drew a blank and made up something wild.

But now I know, I want in-camera double exposure.
Sony can we make it happen? 👀📸

Any time I’m free, I make it a point to hit the Lighting Social at @colabstudiosnyc. Every session is packed with gems, and @neriahmc always delivers. His knowledge and approach to photography makes the trip to NYC more than worth it.⁣⁣
⁣
This class introduced us to set design with @file.jpg , who walked us through how she builds scenes using fabric. I took notes and actually used some of it during a shoot this week! Shoutout to the random curtains I turned into a backdrop 🙌🏾⁣

Grateful to be part of a creative space where learning and experimentation are the norm.⁣
