POSTS STORIES REELS

We’ve spent years working with writers, developing stories, reading scripts and having conversations about what makes a good story.

And one thing we’ve come to understand is how easy it is to become preoccupied with the technical aspects of writing. Structure, dialogue, pacing, getting a scene just right. All important things, of course. But sometimes we get so caught up in how to write a story that we haven’t spent enough time understanding the story we’re trying to tell.

What is the idea really about? What kind of world does it belong to? Who are the people in it, and why should we care about what happens to them? How do we develop an idea into something that can hold someone else’s attention?

These are the questions that informed The Good Story Method.

We’ve taken years of experience working across film, television and other forms of storytelling and developed a course that examines story from the ground up.

12 modules across three phases, with video lessons, workbooks and practical exercises designed to help you think more deeply about story and make more intentional choices in your writing.

Whether you’re writing your first story or your fiftieth, we created this course for you.

The Good Story Method, our first course, is now available through the Narrative Institute at Write Good Stories.

We’ve always believed that every good story has a golden thread. One idea that holds everything together, even when the story goes in a hundred different directions.

A magazine is no different. There are so many decisions to make. What stories do we tell? Who do we speak to? How do we organise them? What should the pages feel like? And somewhere in all of that, you need something that keeps bringing you back to the same idea.

For ÀṢÀ, we found that thread in our languages.

Here’s a little look at how we got there. by @writegoodstories

How do you tell the story of a National Theatre turning 50 and finding its feet again?

The idea for ÀṢÀ came from Tola (@tola_akerele ), GM/CEO of the National Theatre. She wanted the Theatre to have its own magazine. Something that would capture the work being done today, the people behind it, and what the future could hold.

We called it ÀṢÀ, the Yoruba word for culture, and got to work.

Years ago, I walked through the Theatre while it was still being restored. I remember the dust, the old artworks, the red seats. I remember trying to imagine what it must have been like when every one of those seats was full.

Coming back to make the magazine, I found a very different building. And it was the people who helped me understand its story.

We spoke to staff who had worked there for decades, artists returning to its stages, and the team working to make the Theatre a place Nigerians could call their own again.

The building had fallen quiet. The culture had not.

It had lived on in the people who carried it. Now, with the doors open again, there is a chance to bring so much of it home.

That’s what we set out to capture in ÀṢÀ. The history, the work happening today, the questions still waiting for answers, and everything that could come next.

Thank you, Tola, for dreaming this up, and to the entire National Theatre team for trusting us to bring it to life.

@nicoleasinugo came back bearing gifts from her trip and somehow, she managed to find a journal for each of us that feels very, very us.

When you think of advertising, it’s hard not to think of Don Draper. Perfect suits, whiskey, cigarettes. But have you read about Barbara Gardner Proctor, the first Black woman to own an advertising agency in the US?

She got fired after refusing to write an ad she didn’t believe in. And instead of going away, she took up more space.

We went down a rabbit hole and now you have to come with us.
Welcome to The Black Writer’s Archive, a monthly series where we dig up the stories of Black writers around the world, the words they wrote and the things they changed along the way. by @writegoodstories

They say if you want to know a country, read its writers.

So for Nigeria’s 66th, that’s where we went. Eleven places, from Maiduguri to Bonny Island, seen by the people who wrote them down. Some are writers you’ll know. One is a blogger we only just found, and her boat ride in the rain might be our favourite.

Swipe through, then go and read the originals.

None of these writers knew what their books would become. Haven’t read any on the list? You can find them in the WGS library by @writegoodstories

The great thing about creative work is that no two briefs are ever the same.

Usually, a museum begins with the story. The story informs the graphic design, the 3D design, and eventually, what gets built.

This one happened backwards.

The structure was already standing when we came in for the narrative and curatorial work. We had walls.

We had pillars. And somehow, we had to fit the full breadth of a man who had lived a very big life inside them.

It reminded us that storytelling has no fixed template.

Sometimes the process happens in the wrong order. Sometimes the constraints come first. But if you can find the essence, you can always find the story. by @writegoodstories

There has to be a word for this.

That thing where you plan an event for weeks, think you’ve covered every possible thing that could go wrong and then, hours before people arrive, something absolutely has to go wrong.

Is it a rite of passage? A chaos tax? A test from the event gods?

Anyway. We paid ours. 😭

Thank you to everyone who showed up for the first Lone Wolf Brunch Club.

There was food. There were drinks. And there was light! 😂

And it was good. by @writegoodstories
