If writing isn’t on your schedule, it’s time add it!

Choosing to homeschool means choosing a plethora of opportunities for your children… and a big one is the chance to become a strong writer.

Allow it to happen!

You can do in your homeschool what traditional schools struggle to do: give consistent writing time.

Not sure how to do it?

Start by setting a timer for 3 minutes and writing the “story of the day” such as what everyone had for lunch or who won the backyard soccer game last night. (Keep it simple.)

Tomorrow, do it again. Add to the short or start a new one. Set the timer for four minutes this time.

Everyday, keep it on the schedule and keep showing up.

Mostly, what kids need is permission to write and a good listener. (You’re perfect for this job!)

As children develop their writing muscles through this regular use, they will be ready for more — and we will be right here to help you.

New rule: never skip the children’s books at a thrift store!

If we haven’t met, we are Carrie and Emily, writing teachers who help homeschool moms create great writing experiences for their kids.

Today I thrifted one of my favorite kinds of book: a story collection.

Behind this quiet, unassuming blank cover are 45 CLASSIC picture books such as “Curious George,” “Little Bear,” and “Barbar the Elephant.”

Books like this are perfect to tote to a long church meeting, a soccer game, the doctor’s office, a road trip—anywhere you and your child will have moments to read.

Children who are good readers become good writers. The more you read to them, the easier for them to write. Always.

We love that for all the great things she was—Dolly Parton was a writer! Her scholarships to incentivize kids to graduate from high school, her Imagination Library that donates millions of books worldwide to children—all speak to her core belief that one of the best pursuits of life is raising up kids up to be strong writers and readers. 🫶

The essay is not something to be afraid of—for you or your young writer.

It’s simply taking one idea and proving it at least three ways.

And you wrap it all up in a beginning, middle and an end.
