A “Demonstration”As most of you know my main collection is all about 149s. However, as most collectors find out, if new finds for your mainline collections are few and far between, you need to keep yourself busy!For the past couple of years I have been trying my hand at collecting demonstrator pens! My most recent addition was a 147 Demonstrator of which I have only ever seen one other!Let’s see who can name them all! 149 Collection - Demonstrating the DemonstratorsWhilst Montblanc has no shortage of rare and limited pieces. One thing they have never officially released is a “Demonstrator”. These transparent pens serve two purposes, firstly to allow engineers to see internal components working for quality control and design purposes and secondly to show customers ( normally only through boutiques) how these pieces actually function. So here is my rather limited collection of 149 demonstrators in age order:(L-R)1. 1980s (with rare prototype deep navy resin top and bottom)2. 1990/2000s ( with regular black resin top and bottom)3. 2020 Traveller Demonstrator If you have a different version for sale please DM!! 149 Collection - The Resin “High Artistry” collectionContinuing the recent theme of posting around the latest release of the Montblanc High Artistry Tribute to Craftsmanship Limited Edition 1994 Coffret, I thought I would finish by comparing the two High Artistry resin releases. For me I’m sad to say that it’s not really a competition between these prices, the High Artistry Tribute to the Orient Express wins every day!Whilst the theming of the Japan/ Kyoto release is very much on point, I can resist the blue resin 149!What do you think? 149 Collection - The Coral OnesContinuing the recent theme of posting around the latest release of the Montblanc High Artistry Tribute to Craftsmanship Limited Edition 1994 Coffret, I thought I would deep dive into the colour comparison. Some of the comments and commenters in a previous post appear to have noted a colour variation between both pens. I hadn’t really noticed but it piqued my interest. Now, curiously, Montblanc describe both pens as “Coral”. You can check this out on their website. Under the “Features” drop down on the webpage for the 1924 Traveller the barrel and cap description are listed as “Coral Precious Resin”. On the webpage for the High Artistry (or Japan 149 as I call it), the colour in that same drop down is listed as “Coral”. I also see little commercial value in changing the colour between editions ever so marginally. If anything it would be accidental rather than intentional. Why reinvent the wheel? We see this with the Style of Zug 149 and the Glacier series where the same blue was used for both. What do you think? Different colour or the same? And if different do you think it’s intentional! 149 Collection - Wonderful Colours of Meisterstuck Something that has caught my attention is that most of the recent official 149 releases by Montblanc seems to indicate they have switched into ‘technicolour’. For nearly 3/4 of a century the 149 knew no other colour that its iconic black. Yes, the nibs and trims may have had tweaks, but never before 2024 had this line been awash with such vivid colours!Previously, the Maison’s attitude was something reminiscent of the Ford Model T (any colour so long as it’s black). Is this the Maison’s new direction? Whilst innovation is always welcome, and so far the colours have been tasteful, I am slightly concerned that the 149 should not become something similar to a handful of highlighters!What do you think?! 149 Collection - Japan 149To give this latest addition to my collection it proper name, it’s “The High Artistry A Tribute to Craftsmanship Limited Edition 1994 Coffret” AKA the Japan 149. Released in a limited run of 1994 to celebrate the year Kyoto sites became recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its colour is, to my eye, identical to the 1924 Traveller but that doesn’t detract from the fact that’s it’s a fantastic coral colour that I think works well on both 149s. This is only the second High Artistry 149 (the other the Orient Express) and in line with the previous theme, it features an artistic cap engraving, in this case, a Crane performing a mating/ courtship dance. The nib is monotone just like the Orient Express and 1924 Traveller and it features the Sakura or Cherry Blossom 🌸 to link in to the over all theme. The big elephant in the room is of course the black piston knob and what montbkanc are calling the “forepart ring” which is an of way to say the section ring! It didn’t really enamour me to the pen to begin with, but once I saw the photos of Nijo Castle (scroll to end) I could really see that there couldn’t be any other choice for it!What do you think? Will you be purchasing this edition? If not, why? 149 Collection - 75th Anniversary SkeletonWhen I acquired this pen it came with a not insignificant amount of emotion. When I first started collecting 20 years ago, I never in my wildest dreams imagined I would be in a position to acquire this piece. It was then, as I think it is now, the pinnacle of Montblanc craftsmanship. Yes, more modern pieces may have more precious gems etc but in my view none compare to this one. This was the first ever Montblanc skeleton, the first with a mother of Pearl star, part of what I still think is the best series ever produced by Montblanc (the 75th Anniversary) and to top it all off it is solid 18k yellow gold and meticulously hand engraved and there are only 75 of them. My pictures can never do justice to this piece, all the engraving work, the solid gold piston rod, the skeletonised piston mechanism, and the amazing nib. #meisterstück #montblancpen #montblanc149 #pencommunity #fountainpenaddict by @writers.tines

The fascinating process of crafting a Montblanc nib preserved inside plexiglass blocks. Those of us who attended the tour in Hamburg had the opportunity to witness firsthand just how precise the process is and how many individual steps are required to create a single fountain pen nib. In these images, you can see some of the key stages of the production process.I have a secret dream that one day I could make my own nib and go through all of these steps myself, so that every part of it would literally pass through my hands. 149 Collection - UNICEF Power to Write 2007I last posted about this series in Sept 2025. Since then, some 7 months later, have I been fortunate enough to locate an extra piece to add to my collection! The piece that was added was one I had mentioned that I hoped to get in my last post, the ‘Tiara Jacquelina’ signature. From the photo you can see all three with the latest addition being the first one from the left. For Sale - 4810 Prince RegentI rarely sell from my collection however I have started to streamline my collection to focus on my core interests which are 149s and Demonstrator Fountain Pens. Something I added with the intention of using was this lovely Patron of the Arts series Hommage to the Prince Regent 4810. It’s a very elegant pen and is actually very comfortable to write with given the curved section reminiscent of older vintage pens. The engravings are superb and the metal overlay will have been worthy of any skeleton pen (imagine how cool that would have been!). If interested DM me. 149 Collection - Pinstriped Solitaire This pinstriped model from 1995 (that’s the date on the paper work!) is the first generation of 18k solid gold 149 that was produced in-house by Montblanc. Previously, gold models were produced as far pack as late 1970s but were outsourced to companies like Lefebvre (these had goldDomes instead of resin star as seen in this model).
