🛶Lewis & Clark Midwest Headquarters

First visit to the wide Missouri and another state visited!

Learning about the river as we walked the bridge is another lesson on people try and tame nature to fit their own preferences rather than learning on how the river behaves, understanding its patterns, and working alongside it. It’s hard to ignore the number of other species of wildlife we have hindered for our ease of use of the waters.

Parks like these give me hope that we can go back to living with nature and not apart from it.

🦇Mammoth Cave NP🦗

📍Cave City, Kentucky

Mammoth Cave might be my favorite park visited this year . . . and NOT just because it was about 50 degrees down there.

Trying to imagine how the feature was created is hard to grasp. That a river once flowed completely underground and carved out all that space for hundreds of thousands of years. To a human perspective, well there’s nothing we can compare it to or comprehend.

It’s another reminder that though we do a lot to shape our world to fit our needs and comfort, we are just as much part of the world as anything else here.

No matter what we do or how much we alter the planet, Nature probably won’t even remember much of the imprint we leave behind when we’re all gone.

Probably the coolest part was spotting smudge, burn marks on the cave wall at one part. They were left by native peoples 4k years ago! And they’re still there. A remnant of our past presence in the longest cave system in the world.

Here we are today still trying to push its boundaries to unknown spaces and preserve its quality for everyone to enjoy who comes after us.

🌾Indiana Dunes National Park🌊

📍Portage, Indiana

I’ll give the Midwest some credit: the Great Lakes, from what little I experienced, does have an ocean-y feel to them. The winds and waves and found of the surf. However, it does not mean it replaces the sea.

With every park I’m visiting in my Midwest Circuit, I’m seeing so much more of our country than most Americans see in their whole lifetime. Such a joy to enjoy a quiet evening watching the sunset over Chicago on the horizon.

I do love the mountains, but there’s something restorative about when the land meets the sea (or really big lake)😌🏝️

🚂Cuyahoga Valley National Park🐿️

📍Ohio

Situated between Akron and Cincinnati, Cuyhaoga seems like another world once you enter.

Beautiful trails, crackling waterfalls, and steep exposed cliffs, most wouldn’t think of this when considering which national park to visit. But it certainly is worth the it.

🌳Having the parks we have in Raleigh, I appreciate how vital it is to have green/natural spaces to escape civilization and return to your roots as humans and children of the Earth👣

🚣‍♂️New River Gorge National Park🌊

📍West Virginia

Making waves of memories.

What a great time with @aceadventureresort down the New River!

Really thankful @dkmyers16 and @chris_tof_myers came down the river with me. Very blessed to have close family who loves doing outdoor adventures as much as I do.

This trip was especially cool to me because this is the same New River as the one that I know closer to my Alma mater - @appstate
I felt the connection between NC and WVA more after learning we share the same waters. The New River as a matter of fact is older than the Appalachians themselves, among the oldest in the world alongside the Nile!

What stories can be found between mountain and river.

This is one of my favorite things about exploring and visiting the world, our national parks among them. I feel more connected to our planet and to nature being in places that are so ancient. It’s walking through a living history of our home and appreciating the beauty of it all🌎

🐦‍🔥/1️⃣6️⃣ #keeprising

No matter how comfortable, warm, and safe we feel in our ashes, we cannot stay.

No how perilous the storm, how many times we fall, we have to remember we cannot stay.

We must always get back up. We must always look for a the light within us.

That which makes us stronger, better, wiser for the next challenge ahead.

We must always keep rising.

💥February 27, 1776🇺🇸

The Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge is underrated when it comes to events of the American Revolution, especially for residents of North Carolina.

This conflict, that lasted about three minutes, marked the first decisive victory of the Patriots over the British, and the first American casualty in the war - John Grady.

This triumph initiated the Halifax Resolves where North Carolinians were the first to send their delegates to the Continental Congress to vote for independence. So when you see “First in Freedom” on NC license plates, you now know why.

It’s been 250 years since a struggle that was part of a chain of events that led us to now. Remember your history so others don’t remember it for you.
