💛 All the Tomorrows After 💛

I picked this 2025 new adult book up on a whim (I think after coming across its @kirkus_reviews review?) and it completely blew me away, becoming one of my favorite reads of the year and ever. Yi writes — in strikingly beautiful prose — about grief and loneliness, but also of connection and hope. I was particularly struck by the way she captures raw emotions, not through naming them outright, but with hyper specific, knife-bright metaphors that I *felt* rather than simply read.

I think this book is best going in with relatively little information, but I’ll give you a small snippet that avoids spoilers: Our protagonist, Winter Moon, unexpectedly finds herself in financial straits as her high school graduation looms, and so enters into an agreement with her estranged father in order to earn money and build back her savings.

Though this title is technically YA (Winter is 17 years old) I’m calling it new adult because it reads that way. Winter has had to act as an adult from a young age both emotionally and financially, splitting household bills with her mother since age 14, and acts as a caregiver to her grandmother; so despite being in high school, her experience and voice feels more mature to me than most YA characters.

Yi’s writing is also extremely character driven and feels very literary, so — as someone who rarely reads YA — I’d absolutely recommend this book to all of my lit fic-loving friends, as well as readers of YA.

Comparisons that come to mind are Emergency Contact by Mary HK Choi and Win Me Something by Kyle Lucia Wu — two other favorites of mine — so if you loved either of those, this is a must-read!

In honor of ALS Awareness Month, I’d like to share a bit about my dad. 🤍

I still struggle to express the scope and impact of his illness. It is vast. But so, too, was my 아빠: his presence and love. He built up his business over decades post-immigration, sang sad Korean ballads at 노래방, adored rice cakes and froyo, and made furniture on Sundays. He remains one of my biggest reasons.

I believe remembrance plays a significant role in awareness. My debut novel was written to both honor my dad and give shape to our family’s journey. Vulnerability is daunting, but connection through our personal stories is always a gift.

QoTD: What’s a book that you will forever recommend to everyone?

To all those who are crazy enough to trust me to ask me for book recommendations, I will forever recommend All the Tomorrows After by Joanne Yi @writingjojo

It’s one of my top reads in 2025 and an unforgettable one! This book explores grief in all its elements and just hits you so hard! The lyrical writing is beautiful and will leave you in a sobbing mess! I lost track of how many times my heart broke and mend itself throughout the story. So, be warned to have a tissue box handy!

This book also hits close to home reminding me of my mum’s passing. I was a mess after reading the book and had to translate these into character profiles. I love them so much that I want to share them again!
