One of the most profound names of the aesthetic movement of the 1880s and 1890s in England is of Oscar Wilde. Not only did his work exude aestheticism and pleasure, he also knew how to breathe awareness and even remorse into his pieces of literature. He is regarded as one of the greatest playwrights of the Victorian Era. Apart from being a charismatic person at writing and art, he was a brilliant student at college. After earning his B.A. at Oxford, Wilde settled in London in 1879 and two years later published his first book, Poems. Most of the poems in this volume had been previously published in various Irish periodicals. In his lifetime, he wrote nine plays, one novel, and numerous poems, short stories, and essays. His first and only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, was published in 1891 and received quite a negative response. This had much to do with the novel's homoerotic overtones, which caused something of a sensation amongst Victorian critics. In 1891, Wilde began a love affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, who was also a poet and became both the love of his life and his downfall. The novel did bring critical scrutiny in his time, but endured to become a classic work of fiction, and an icon in the author’s cannon of literary works. 🪶
