Saying goodbye to October is like saying goodbye to a friend who lives halfway around the world. I hope everyone had a splendidly spooky October 🍂🫶🏻

Golden leaves, tiny mushrooms, cold wind through church steeples… Autumn is the most inspirational season for my writing. I always want to start a new project in the autumn, and how ironic is that? When nature is decaying and falling dormant, my creativity is the most alive.

Just admiring my writing desk setup as I type a second draft of a short story.

They’re very different books, but each one had a profound impact on me. Whenever I meet a book lover, I recommend these books without fail. Swipe to see why →

Circe: Beautiful writing that provides insight into a perspective shut off by history while still staying as true as possible to Homer’s Odyssey.

Catch-22: A hilarious book until it isn’t. The reality of war creeps up on you when reading this, and while you’re laughing at the absurdity of the characters, you begin to realize the sober horror that lurks just beneath the surface.

Cold Mountain: A love story that surpasses distance, war, tribulations, poverty, fear, and death. Two perspectives of one romance that depicts just how raw and strong real love can be.

The Name of the Wind: A stunning fantasy that immediately pulls you in and stands tropes on their heads.

The Bell Jar: A classic for a reason. Melancholic and sympathetic, Esther’s story peels back the veil of expectations for a young woman whose dreams are shaken. by @written.by.sab

I couldn’t not share this writing advice, because even though it feels intuitive, actually formulaically thinking about my metaphors and similes with the end goal being a vivid, crunchy, and tangible comparison has really helped!

Especially when in a first draft, my words can float away from me, and my figurative language isn’t as solid as I know it can be. Purposefully thinking about metaphors and similes using abstract and concrete nouns has anchored my writing more and pulled me out of a slump.

Will you give it a try, or do you already think about your comparisons like this?
