POSTS STORIES REELS

Breaking my posting silence to share that my master’s thesis is now available online! Since I have free will, I thought it would be best to celebrate with a picture of me outside of a Cookout right after my commencement ceremony.

It’s crazy to reflect on this process months removed from it (considering how much time and energy it took), but I’m glad it’s available for people to read now! The link will be in my bio — the only way to access the entire document past the preview on Proquest is to have an up-to-date institutional login, but the full PDF is available upon request.

It’s a long read, but it contains valuable contributions to the field worth combing through. Enjoy! 🌟 by @writtenbygabbi

My last longform piece for @redandblackga went up today! Really honored to cover the 50th anniversary of a store as iconic as @wuxtryathens (and fitting to close out my time here covering the music beat)! Very proud of this one. Check it out at the link in my bio 🕺

That’s a wrap for On the Beat: a Red & Black Concert Series for the semester! Thank you so much to @dri_does_things for bringing a beautiful and experimental set to our office and for sharing your perspective during the Q&A. Be sure to check out the full Q&A article and the video on @redandblackga site!

More thanks to @tattoologicband and @asymptomatics for coming in this semester and being so open to performing and chatting! It takes more effort than people might realize for an artist to pair down their usual setup to something more unplugged and intimate, and that effort wasn’t unnoticed. You guys were all a dream to work with!

Final thanks to everyone at the Red & Black who made this process so much easier. First and foremost, this series is the brainchild of @kaitonthebeat, whose vision for Tiny Desk-style content in the newsroom was both so innovative and practical. Thank you for providing so much guidance when I took on the music beat reporter position! Thank you to @_taylorgreaves for all of the time you spent filming and editing OTB footage — I know it takes a lot of effort but I’m so glad our visions aligned for how we wanted these performances to look on video!! Thank you to @addieweberwrites for all of your efforts to bring these performances to our socials, @ktat.photography, @hos.an.na and @rosiecoloredphotos for taking beautiful photos, and to @kaylarenie and @katiebrooksbooks for helping me bring performers to the newsroom!

Because of all of you, we got to contribute to our goal of bringing local artists to the newsroom, and that’s all a music reporter could ever ask for 🌟🌟 by @writtenbygabbi

The graduate school made it official, so now I can exhale. I am done with my thesis!

First of all, let me say that writing a qualitative thesis is as time consuming as you might think it is, and it’s also not glamorous. It requires you to spend a lot of time alone with your thoughts and feelings about the subject matter. It’s like journalism in that way; you must always cover your topic truthfully and objectively, but you can never fully check your humanity at the door, especially when you’re writing about something that’s important to you. And the intersections between music, journalism, and feminism are, to say the least, more important to me than I can begin to articulate.

What I CAN articulate right now is how thankful I am to everyone in my life who supported me in the process, including my committee. My major professor, Dr. Lough, was so receptive to my idea during our first meeting and it was refreshing to work closely with someone so acquainted with the world of music journalism. I also have to shout out Dr. Whipple and Dr, Briscoe, my committee members, for approaching my research with a wealth of expertise and giving me robust feedback. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to work with people who you collaborate well with (and who understand your vision).

On one last note, it’s amazing what you can do with enough grit and confidence, and that has to come from you, but it should also be reinforced by a positive support system. I’ll always work hard, but I won’t reject the opportunity to spend time with my friends and family in the process because my community is what rejuvenates me on the days where I’ve felt less motivated. My support system consists of people who will give me a swift kick when I need to get it together, and simultaneously remind me to be kind to myself and not burn out. Both of those things got me through the process, and I am endlessly proud of the result :) by @writtenbygabbi

Proud & excited to have hosted our March installment of On the Beat for @redandblackga last week! Thank you again to @tattoologicband for bringing your music to our office and being so open about your creative process as a band during the interview.

Additional thanks to @hos.an.na for taking photos, @_taylorgreaves for capturing the whole thing on video and @addieweberwrites for live-streaming the performance!

Check out the Q&A and full video on the Red & Black’s site 🎧 looking forward to what’s to come in April! by @writtenbygabbi
