Sneak peek into the first few steps of a sci-art-game project that @ishikamacaca and I have been working on for the last few months based on her PhD research at @cwsindia .

Back in 2021, not so long after I graduated and moved into the role of an educator, I wrote a piece for the Connect Magazine, IISc on a topic I've held close to my heart for as long as I can think back to.

Primarily written as someone deeply invested in the topic, having spent significant hours mulling over it, and as an ex-member of the campus peer support group that many of us had worked so hard towards building and supporting in the final years of our graduate life.

In the wake of this collective grief, mourning and rage among the country's youth and also in my current li'l academic world, can't help being transported to the months during COVID, where I thought and sometimes wrote fervently about the systemic nature of mental wellness... Of any wellness.

Yet there were aspects to my writing which could not make its way to this article in its raw form. The more I wanted to shift towards the global, the push was towards the personal. But the personal is political. Wellness is political. This maddening inequitable race for "productivity & success" in a dysfunctional world, in a dysfunctional system imposed on nervous systems that are parched, scathed and scalded generationally, in want of a breathing space. In want of comfort and peace. In want of a ray of hope to just be. To aspire for a life of safety & dignity. All is political.

It's been 5 years. Has there been any constructive/positive shift in the academic culture? I'm all ears. Do share.
It's been 5 years. And I sit again with a certain heaviness after all these years, and a wavering flame of hope. Time to write a new article? But where without any censoring?

As part of the 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐛 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐬 × 𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, fellows participated in a 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 facilitated by 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐤 @wrong_tool_i from 11th–17th July 2026.

Through interactive exercises and collaborative learning, the session introduced fellows to the principles of 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, encouraging them to approach challenges with 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. Fellows explored 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, and 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 to better understand the needs and aspirations of local communities.

Building on these learnings, fellows identified key insights from the field, developed 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, and designed 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬 that thoughtfully balance 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. The session encouraged fellows to think beyond conventional solutions and create tourism initiatives rooted in local realities and long-term sustainability.

All the hard work of our Future full of forest fellows finally paid off! 🌳
After countless falls, funny fails, wild ideas, noisy practices and endless teamwork, they successfully graduated and developed their very own games….

From running around like confused squirrels to becoming true creators, every little step, every laugh, and every “Oops, let’s try again!” brought them closer to this moment. Some days were messy, some days were magical but together, they turned imagination into something real.

They didn’t just make games they made memories, friendships and a story worth celebrating forever. by @wrong_tool_i

Games can be powerful tools for conservation. At our 3-day workshop, we explored how play can inspire awareness, deepen connections with nature, and bring conservation stories to life. From understanding the importance of traditional games to learning how to design our own, every moment was a blend of creativity and purpose, beautifully captured through sketchnotes by Arundhati Venkat.

Convivial Commons Congress

Convivial Commons Congress is an artistic research installation and speculative governance experiment that explores how non-human actors can participate in collective decision-making through artificial intelligence. The work stages a congress of five AI-based assistants, each representing different biotic and non-biotic actors through autonomous analysis of sensor data, environmental measurements, scientific models, and public datasets. Rather than speaking about nature, the installation renders decision-making as a non-verbal, spatial, and material process, translating negotiation, conflict, and alignment into perceptible forms. Building on the ZK/U project BeeDAO (documenta fifteen), Convivial Commons Congress investigates procedural participation beyond human-centered representation.

Initiated by ZK/U Proxylab, the first iteration was developed in 2025 on invitation by BeFantastic and the Goethe-Institut Bangalore, in collaboration with teams from Bangalore and Berlin.
