POSTS STORIES REELS

May your coffee kick in before reality does. by @wrylydotcom

The exploration of motherlessness, girlhood and kinship, and the lengths one would go to to belong reminded me so much of Toni Morrison's Sula and The Bluest Eye. Tayari Jones is a gorgeous writer, able to take you on an emotional journey and into her characters' deepest crevices.

Kin is one of my best reads so far, a morbidly gorgeous book that, once you enter, refuses to let you go. by @wrylydotcom

I will be reading a short excerpt from my short story, Postmortem, this Saturday at the Brittle Paper Lit Fest.

This story came about when I was wondering how scary it must be to find yourself falling out of love with someone. This was how I was feeling the entire time reading Bryan Washington's novel, Memorial, how sometimes you wake up and realise that the love is just not there anymore. What then?

You can join us. It promises to be an incredible day of poetry and prose readings, and discussions on the role of the writer in this ever-changing cultural climate.

See you then.

“Well, for one thing, the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We're teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it. Create your own. Most people can't do it.”

—Mitch Albom, from "Tuesdays with Morrie."

A note to @ntsikibless, I am reading it, finally. Thank you.

WFH looks a little something like coffee, skimming newly-released comics and catching up with old faves, trying to catch up on to-do lists longer than your arm, more coffee, and internalising Black teenage angst.

Very normal, right? I think so.

A bookish kind of Galentine's 🩷🖤📚 For our first read of the year, we took a trip to Orïsha, Lagos, where Tomi Adeyemi takes us through the trials of a young maji girl named Zélie, her brother Tzain, and Amari, a princess on the run, who are on a quest to perform a ritual at a sacred temple to bring back magic.

The story received mixed reviews (read: greatly unmoving) from the girlies, so I'm looking forward to hearing what you thought of the book.

We're reading Kopano Matlwa's Bosadi next, if you'd like to join us 🫶🏽.

x always, Nkesh

REVIEW 🐈‍⬛ Selected Stories and Poems
by Edgar Allan Poe

“With such precautions the courtiers might bid defiance to contagion. The external world could take care of itself. In the meantime it was folly to grieve, or to think.”

From afar, this is just a collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s greatest and loved stories and poems, like The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Annabel Lee, and The Fall of the House of Usher. But the more you flip the pages, the deeper you dive into this man’s incredibly murky mind and his disgusting literary sensibilities, is the more you realise how you’ll forever be changed by the time you reach the end.

My greatest takeaway from this was that, no matter how much I cry, I could never write as brilliantly and as inspired as Poe. It both infuriates and eggs me on to try my best, to see if I can even dare to touch the surface of his work’s depth. I enjoyed reading this collection, being moved to feel enraged and saddened by the experiences these people found themselves in. Poe writes doomed characters with such clarity and ease, with a kind of honesty that leaves the reader wondering if they were meant to feel the way they felt.

I was particularly fond of grotesqueness of The Black Cat, and how Poe portrays how easy it is to descend into madness and self-destruction, as well as the moral repercussions faced by the characters in The Masque of the Red Death - the latter reminded me of the Norwegian film, Kadaver. Both Kadaver and Red Death highlight the hubris of the privileged and how it leads to their undoing. Brilliant!

I look forward to the day Ari Aster adapts one of his works. I feel like something incredibly unhinged would come from this “collaboration.”

x always, Nkesh

“Something he has written is that madness cries. Even when it shouts, dry-eyed and awful, it cries.”

Hi @miraripress, thank you for making my entire year 💜.

I've already packed copies of Bunny and The Seven Wonders to keep me company in Durban. Can't wait to dive in.
