Please join us for the Public Lecture portion of Ph.D. Candidate Fariba Pajooh's @fariba.pjh doctoral dissertation defense on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. ET via Zoom.

Her dissertation explores how journalists who have experienced conflict and displacement manage significant professional, cultural, and personal transitions after resettling in North America. It examines how they redefine their professional roles, identities, ethical responsibilities, and understanding of journalism as they adapt to new media systems and communities. This research looks at this transition through three distinct phases: the conflict itself, the evacuation, and the ongoing process of rebuilding a career and identity in exile. It also reinterprets a challenge often viewed as a professional weakness—that a journalist's own displacement and lived experience influence their reporting—as a source of insight and depth.

Congratulations to Fariba on reaching this milestone in her Ph.D. journey, and to her doctoral advisor, Dr. Fred Vultee.

This spring and summer, @WayneState students are diving into one of the most transformative shifts in the modern workplace: how #artificialintelligence is reshaping the communication professions.

Through “AI and Communication Work”, a hybrid course designed by Rahul Mitra, Associate Professor of Organizational Communication, students are encouraged to think deeply about how AI is transforming professional identities and workplace expectations, even as they try various AI tools for professional work.

The class has teamed up with @detroitrescuemission_official on three service learning initiatives to help the unhoused population gain access to food security, learn employment skills, and encourage the organization's donor base. Students are also engaging with and learning from professional experts.

Congratulations to Wayne State Department of Communication professors Stephanie Tong @stomtong and Elizabeth Stoycheff @estoych, and their collaborators Lauren Hamel, Heather Abraham, and Heather Gupta, for being awarded 1 of only 4 "Grand Challenge" research grants by the Wayne State University Division of Research & Innovation.

Their project will examine the "Effects of AI on Parents’ Online Health Information Seeking and Providers’ Clinical Interactions."

The #GrandChallenge program at @WayneState aims to tackle complex research questions through an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach and supports teams of researchers interested in pursuing a large-scale, center-size funding opportunity in the next one to two years.

We are so proud of and ecstatic for Teaching Professor and Director of the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity, Alicia Nails, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Professional Journalists Wednesday on May 20.

In her acceptance speech, Nails reflected on being the third generation in her family to achieve such outstanding professional success. She credited this to her long-standing relationship with the National Association of Black Journalists, who honored her as the 2018 Educator of the Year, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and 23 years of teaching students at Wayne State.
