Traveling and living with James “Sperm” Broderick building skateparks, playing in bands, living under bridges, back of skates shops, in cars and on the road, were the most fun years of my life. He was always stoked to build or go on a mission. His diehard DIY work ethic and spirit was unmatched and his love for skateboarding and his friends was abundant. Constantly making everyone he met laugh and instantly feel like a brother. He is truly missed and forever celebrated. This Sunday August 23rd there will be an international celebration of life for James. Heavy sessions at the DIY Parks he helped build, FDR (Philly), WASHINGTON STREET (San Diego), BURNSIDE (Portland OR), NATIONAL DIY (Milwaukee) Stu Graham and I will be doing a sesh at LIVI SKATEPARK IN LIVINGSTON SCOTLAND for all the UK homies… Wherever you are in the world get some grinds, share some stories, do some art, have some laughs, and pour some out for our brother James. unbelievable. 💔 Mickey had the biggest heart of gold and was glowing with life & love only weeks ago when i took this photo 8.23.26 at JEB3 memorial . James lived every day with the same passion. To create, to help others & to be a part of DIY projects wherever they might be. I watched him assemble this bucket full of tools with such zest, proudly put his JEB3 initials on each tool and draw his little Sperm face on the bucket. 😭 Life is VOID without him in it. 💔 by @landofpop

A gathering of shared love, memories & stories to honor the man, the myth, legend & spirit of Sperm. ✨🌟✨ Light refreshments will be avail. Feel free to bring an easy picnic style contribution or your own NA beverages as we respect the parks no alcohol policy & what would have been James 11 years sober & 44th birthday. There is limited seating but lots of grass. Bring a chair if desired :) Picnic Area F in NE area of park with closest parking along SE Ankeny St off Cesar Chavez...enter by center bathroom paved path. To commemorate James’ dedication & love for bridge DIY, an OFY! The last skate trip I went on with James and Matt, we rocked the shit out of MC Hammer Too Legit to Quit. It was a great trip to Madras, Prineville, two parks in Bend, and Sisters in Oregon. That’s the stuff I’ll always remember and that’s the stuff not everyone gets to do. It was a great send off for everybody who could get there and I told a lot of people who didn’t know that if everyone who loved him was there we’d need five of these banquet halls. I wore his Ric Flair socks for the occasion, and my WSVT ripped up shirt he gave me 20 years ago (under my button up Vans shirt, my wife said there were a lot of brand new Vans, business skate formal). Joey P’s a poet and a prophet. Sperm is still making me mix tapes. Autumn, my wife Maureen, my daughter Morwenna, and I went around vandalizing his Jersey Shore spots with Brian Munn’s homemade stickers. Standouts are his first job as a pork roll cook on the beach and the almighty former Casino Skate Park. We saw a dude who looked like a real life original Sperm artwork character (sorry dude, I bet you’re cool but if you’re not sorry anyway). We visited his old screen printing job in Bradley Beach. Our guy is rocking in heaven. He’s under a beautiful tree with his sister, brother, and father. We love you bud. You touched so many of our lives and we’ll love you forever, you fucking horse toothed jackass ma ma monkey. Wahoooooooooo! And he always said “I hope you have a great rest of your day!”. Some hit harder than others, 30+ years ago this 12 yr old kid shows up on our porch with a beastie boys shirt and a skateboard and stuck around for a while. Not only becoming great friends, but an unofficial adopted little brother. Playing music, skating, going to shows, side hustle making patches for H2O, and general dumbassery you’re supposed to do growing up, the memories are endless. All you ever dreamed about was either playing music or skating. When your adventures brought you across the country and we didn’t see each other as often, I was psyched knowing you did it, and made a huge impact in the skating community creating and building parks that will always be connected to you. It’s never easy saying goodbye and today was tough to do just that, but the memories will never fade. Rest easy my friend @wsvtresident by @landofpop

Funeral services for James Edward Broderick the Third JEBIII, the one and only Sperm, will be as follows: Tuesday, July 21st - 10 AM Funeral service at Saint Margaret’s Church in Spring Lake, NJ followed by burial at St. Catharine’s Cemetery in Sea Girt, NJ Keep posted for a memorial skate session held simultaneously at FDR, Washington Street, Burnside, and National DIY to honor his memory and to keep living this life that the companies, Olympic judges, cops, and most parents will never understand. I met all my best friends riding skateboards under bridges, in empty swimming pools (like Q man said), or in the streets. Come keep the fire burning.
