This spring, Fatima Aljarman interviewed Hisham Matar about his translation of Naguib Mahfouz’s “I Found Myself: The Last Dreams,” poetic vignettes from the final years of the beloved Egyptian author and Nobel laureate. Excerpts below

“Writing actually trains you well for it, it turns out, because when you write, there’s also a form of translation. In my case, a book arrives in a sort of shapeless, wordless way. It doesn’t arrive to me in language. It arrives often in sensibility or feeling or a way of being. It’s a temperament. It has an attitude and a temperament and a voice before you find its voice.”

“Strangely, given how personal my writing is in particular, what I discovered is that I should get myself out of the way when I’m writing. That is when things start to proceed. The more that I make it about myself, the more it feels wrong. Which is oxymoronic: I’ve written two memoirs and my novels feed off things very close to my experiences, to my heart. It’s strange, but it really isn’t about you. You’re creating something, and that thing—if it has any worth—becomes independent.” by @wtfa6ma

For the summer 2026 cycle of Bayt AlMamzar’s writing residency, we welcome UAE-based writers and creatives across all disciplines to experiment and develop writing-based translatory projects. During this cycle, Bayt AlMamzar invites you to suspend singularity and embrace multiplicity. ❤️🌀

As Édouard Glissant says, “we write in the presence of all the world’s languages, even if we know none of them.” We implore you: write it all!

Residents will have 24/7 access to a dedicated workspace, as well as the common areas, library, and kitchen at Bayt AlMamzar. The residency also includes weekly workshops with the residency coordinators, an open reading, and will culminate in a final chapbook.

What remains when history is scattered across fragments? Presented at The @nypl from October 2025 to March 2026, Niyū Yūrk brought together overlooked materials and lived histories to map MENA presence in New York, where archives, memory, and community converged under ongoing pressures of migration and visibility.
