龍岡米干節 2026 Longgang Rice Noodle Festival

Did you know that in Longgang, Taoyuan, there’s a Yunnan, Burmese, and Thai community that celebrates a water blessing festival similar to Thailand’s Songkran and Myanmar’s Thingyan? How and why?

Longgang’s Yunnan culture comes from the story of the “Forgotten Soldiers” 孤軍gūjūn (KMT soldiers from Yunnan who were left behind near the Myanmar–Thailand border after the Chinese Civil War).

Many later came to Taiwan and settled in Longgang, Taoyuan. Their traditions were influenced by the Yunnan–Myanmar–Thailand border region, especially Dai, Burmese, and Muslim Yunnan communities.

That’s why 龍岡米干節 is more than just a food festival, it’s a way to remember their history, culture, and sacrifices.

Final Celebration Dates:
May 1 (Friday) – May 2 (Saturday) 2026

Closing Events:
• Fire performances
• Torch festival
• Water Blessing ritual （sprinkling）
• Bathing the Buddha ceremony
• Cultural performances & parades

The festival spreads across three main locations in the Longgang area, and each place has a different role during the celebration:

📍 Zhongzhen New Village Cultural Park 忠貞新村文化園區
This is where many cultural exhibitions, community activities, and parts of the Yunnan heritage experience including rice noodles DIY booth.

📍 Yunnan Cultural Park 雲南文化公園
This area focuses more on both food and cultural booths. It is where you can do “Bathing the Buddha” ritual.

📍 Longgang Parade Ground 龍岡大操場
This is the main stage for large scale events like fire performances, and the closing Torch Festival

If you grew up in Southeast Asia among Minnan Chinese communities, you may have heard the term 番仔 (hoan-á) used to refer to Indigenous people.

The character 番 originally means "foreign" or "outside the Chinese world".

Historically, Chinese speakers used it for people, places, animals, and crops that were considered unfamiliar or introduced from elsewhere

When applied to people however, 番仔 reflected a historical perspective that viewed Indigenous peoples as "outsiders" or "non-Han“. Because of this history, the term is now widely regarded as outdated and offensive when referring to Taiwan Indigenous peoples.

Following her formal apology on August 1, 2016, former President Tsai Ing-wen poses with an 80-year-old Tao elder from Orchid Island. She is presenting him with a printed, signed copy of the official apology text.

The elder accepted the document on behalf of the 16 recognized Aboriginal communities to mark the beginning of reconciliation. by @wufrans
