The Swiss street art duo Nevercrew usually explores the delicate tension between humans, nature, and civilization in their work. In Wuppertal-Unterbarmen, they showcase a giant elephant floating in a glass music box directly above the famous suspension railway (Schwebebahn).

The unbelievable part: The artists knew absolutely nothing about the Wuppertal legend of Tuffi the elephant beforehand! They only realized it once they were on site in Wuppertal – the motif was a complete coincidence! And to top it off, there is Sri Navathurgadevi Tempel right behind the artwork, in whose culture the elephant – in the form of the figure Ganesha – is highly revered. So, Tuffi and Ganesha all in one!

For us, this is the perfect bridge to our conversation with the association for the blind: The glass dome separates the elephant from its environment and restricts its movement. This is the daily reality for visually impaired people: They navigate every single day within a glass dome that we cannot see, but whose barriers blind people have to overcome constantly.

FULL HOUSE AND LOTS OF ACTION ❤️

A very special throwback: On September 30, 2024, NRW Heimat Minister Ina Scharrenbach visited us at our StreetArt spot on Ronsdorfer Straße. Together with former City Director Matthias Nocke, we enjoyed this great moment.

The Belgian artist Iota painted live at the Barmenia parking garage. We had a short meeting with students and @ina_jeske from the @uni.wuppertal. The artist @frau.poeks hosted a graffiti workshop and the minister joined right in!

We had visitors from the neighborhood, workshop participants, and a huge press buzz. That made it an unforgettable day. BIG THX to everyone for that!

BIG THX goes to the @barmeniagothaer.wuppertal for their great support with parking, catering, and on-site accompaniment. 🍿

Another BIG THX goes to the @mhkbd_nrw. The Heimat funding and your trust made this fantastic project possible. For sure: Heimat connects people. It goes far beyond borders and goes right into the heart. Local identity creates a real feeling of belonging and a strong bond for everyone! 🌍❤️

Auf ein kurzes Wort. 🗣️

Wir verstehen die ganze Aufregung nicht! Wir haben uns lediglich von der „Mural App Wuppertal“ distanziert und die Presse gebeten, unsere Arbeit in den Berichten nicht mehr mit der App in Verbindung zu bringen, weil sie unserem Qualitätsanspruch nicht entspricht. Darüber hinaus interessiert uns weder die Mural App noch „(M)eine Stunde für Wuppertal“ noch Markus von Blomberg.

Was wir nicht diskutieren, ist ein Allmachtsanspruch aufgrund von Ehrenamtlichkeit. Sorry Leute, der Zweck heiligt nicht die Mittel. Fremde Projekte ungefragt übernehmen geht nicht – auch nicht für einen guten Zweck. Es spielt auch keine Rolle, wofür Gelder von der gGmbH akquiriert wurden – die Akquise erfolgte auf Basis unserer Kuration und der Nutzung unserer Murals.

Gesprächsbedarf mit den App-Machern gibt es nicht: Eine qualitativ schlechte App bleibt eine qualitativ schlechte App. Daran ändern auch die Beteiligungsangebote an unseren eigenen Projekten der gGmbH nichts. Es ist unser gutes Recht als Träger der internationalen Projekte @urbaner_kunstraum_wuppertal und @wuppertal_tanzt, uns zu distanzieren, wenn wir das Verhalten anderer als geschäftsschädigend empfinden – und von diesem Recht haben wir Gebrauch gemacht.

Wenn von Blomberg schon irgendwelche E-Mails zitiert, dann sollte er auch alles zitieren. Wir können keine Nutzungsrechte an Dritte weitergeben, das können nur die Urheber der Kunstwerke selbst. „Keine explizite Ablehnung“ stimmt somit nicht! Eine Schnitzeljagd mit hochwertiger Kunst ist auch nicht unser Style. Wir respektieren unsere Künstler und trauen unserem Publikum mehr zu als das! All das haben wir ihn wissen lassen – aber das zitiert er nicht.

Zum Abschluss noch ein persönliches Wort: Als Wuppertal Botschafter gibt es unzählige Wege, sich ehrenamtlich für die Stadt und ihre Akteure einzusetzen. Aber die hochwertige Kuration eines lokalen Akteurs ungefragt zu übernehmen und in eine dilettantische App zu stecken, gehört nicht dazu.

Schönen Tach noch, wir sind raus. 🎤💥

Behind this monumental artwork lies a story that gets under your skin and couldn't be more relevant today.

Originally, Ukrainian artist Sasha Korban was planned for this wall, but he was unable to leave the country because of the war. Iota stepped in and immortalized Sasha in her mural – with a title that resonates on so many painful levels: “Behind our Walls”. 🛑🕊️

The “wall” here is more than just concrete; it stands for the borders in our minds. This became deeply clear during an exchange with the geography class from the @Uni.wuppertal under @ina_jeske. Many students only come here to study, rarely taking the time in their busy daily lives to look behind the hardcore chavvy facade of our city.

This mural is a loud wake-up call to all of us: Look closely. Do your research. Question prejudices before you judge. And inform yourselves a damn sight better before rashly ticking the box on the right side next time. 🗳️❌

There is always a story behind the wall, behind every human being... We just have to be willing to see it. 👁️✨

"Last Lullaby" by German street artist @misterwoodland at Heinrich-Bammel-Weg 36a for @urbaner_kunstraum_wuppertal.

Behind this gigantic facade artwork in the Osterholz neighborhood lies a very special, deeply touching story.

The inspiration for this mural by Mister Woodland is based on our conversations on the topic of "Home and Identity". Five residents of the nearby @diakonievohwinkel entrusted us with their personal stories and inspiring insights. 🤍

The result: The Mural "Last Lullaby" – a visual journey through life, a horn of plenty filled with life stories, and a sensitive reflection on the finility of time. Timeless and profound. ⏳✨

The works of German street artist Mister Woodland are characterized by a striking fusion of dark surrealism, classical painting, and modern graphic fragments. Although his roots lie in classical 1990s graffiti, he focuses entirely on narrative, figurative compositions ("characters") on massive walls. 🎨🖌️

Mantra met our conversation with dedicated neighbors from the Hesselnberg quarter – a hood on the rise, perfectly nestled between industrial heritage and natural idyll.

Mantra is globally renowned for his gigantic, photorealistic nature murals on building facades. Butterflies and insects are his worldwide trademark. Sometimes he paints them inside display cases, other times in the wild. But he always creates them with extreme attention to detail and in colossal dimensions. Occasionally, he also combines delicate female portraits with floral patterns to showcase the unity of humanity and nature.

His mural "Wo das Wunder blüht" (Where the Wonder Blooms) tells the story of the neighborhood's green surroundings – but also of the small, human wonders that bloom locally through community spirit… 🌸💚

Fintan Magee’s art perfectly bridges the gap to our recent conversation at proviel: people living with mental illness deeply yearn for visibility. 🌐

Like a journalist, Magee uses public spaces to shine a light on societal issues. Instead of heroes, he portrays ordinary, anonymous people in moments of loneliness, loss, or mental distress – making them visible in a world that so often overlooks them. 👥

His signature style – painting people behind textured glass – creates a blur that also defines his Wuppertal mural. It serves as a powerful symbol: we might see the person, but their true story and identity remain hidden. 🖼️.

With this monumental Pina Bausch mural, the Argentine duo creates a fascinating bridge to the artistic vision of Boris Charmatz, the former French artistic director of Tanztheater Wuppertal. 🎨✨
Both approaches break down the traditional walls of art. They transform public space into a shared stage for everyone and directly evoke legendary dance projects like WUNDERTAL or CERCLES. Just as Charmatz and his company @terrain_bc claimed Wuppertal's bare asphalt, the duo's mural reaches people directly in their everyday lives on the street. 🏙️🙌

Medianeras used an optical illusion for this—anamorphosis—which perfectly reflects the essence of Charmatz’s choreography: nothing remains static, and the image only comes together through the viewer's own movement. It is the visual preservation of that fleeting moment Charmatz physically brought into the city. A deeply emotional symbiosis where movement transfers from the human body into the architecture—as if Wuppertal itself is beginning to dance. 💃🕺

Hektor is a street artist from Paris who has been painting for over 20 years. Right next to the Barmer Anlagen, he created his beautiful mural "Temps Mort" ("Time Out"). 🎨🧱

The artwork mixes abstract styles with real life. It fits perfectly with the history of the park! 160 years ago, the Barmer Verschönerungsverein @barmeranlagen made this park so factory workers could relax in nature. We talk about with the leadership. 🌱💼
