Jazz vocalist Eliana Joy turned a challenging chapter into a creative momentum after undergoing major jaw surgery in St. Petersburg in 2024. The Southwest native, known for her interpretations of The Great American Songbook, has since balanced a wide-ranging career that includes music education, public radio, pottery and gallery work. After earning a euphonium degree and performing with the Santa Fe Opera, Joy moved to Brooklyn to immerse herself in jazz and vocal standards. Just as her performance career was gaining traction, she was diagnosed with a jaw condition that required extensive surgery. During her recovery, Joy spent time playing piano and making ceramics. Joy has since returned to Santa Fe where she maintains an active presence across the arts and cultural community. “The more comfortable you are with what you are bringing to the table, the easier and more gentle the experience of collaborating is,” Joy said. “If everyone is showing up exactly as themselves and prepared, there's so much more room for inspiration.” Today, her story is one of resilience, creativity and a continual commitment to the arts. Joy performed in the WUSF Performance Studio with Tampa Bay musicians Alex Malkovich (guitar/saxophone), Cooper Madden (bass) and Ayrias Pedigo (drums). by @wusfjazz
We wouldn’t sound like home without the local musicians who fill our airwaves. This October 28, WUSF is celebrating Public Radio Music Day by recognizing artists like Clearwater pianist Dan Bremer whose music helps tell the story of our region. Dan performed in our studio for WUSF's Studio Sessions video series. He received a professional video as part of his performance. "I am disabled and 80 years old. I don't go out to jazz clubs to hear local players. I used the video you produced of me playing “The Nearness of You” as an audition video. I submitted it to the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival 2025. I won a gold medal and was invited to play at the festival, which was held in Indianapolis, in May of 2025." Public radio gives local artists a place to be heard—and gives listeners a place to discover the music being created around them. #PublicRadioMusicDay2026 by @wusfjazz
At WUSF, we’re celebrating Public Radio Music Day today (October 28, 2026) by sharing the music, voices, and stories that make the greater Tampa Bay region feel like home. From the local artists we champion to the traditions we help preserve, we’re proud to reflect the sound of our community. Jazz has been important to us for 60 years, and we will continue to serve our community by highlighting and celebrating our talented local musicians that make this area thrive. Join us as we celebrate what home sounds like. #PublicRadioMusicDay2026 by @wusfjazz
In a city known for its growing arts community, Aliqua emerges as one of the more inventive musical collectives on the local scene. They have developed a distinctive sound that blends elements of jazz, rock, hip-hop and improvisation that reflects not only the diversity of Tampa’s musicians but also the group’s collaborative spirit. The band members (Zanzibean, Alex Savinon, Radio Bo, Kingsley Reeves III, Jeremiah “Yogi” Warren) first connected through overlapping creative circles and organizations such as Cigar City Records, a Tampa-based collective that brings together musicians, visual artists and other creatives. That network helped shape Aliqua’s approach with songs often developing organically through group jam sessions and shared ideas. Rather than focusing on genres, the musicians say they are motivated by curiosity and connection. Their performances embrace experimentation while remaining rooted in the camaraderie that helped launch the project. “Music is no longer really a competition. It’s a collaborative effort, and the more you keep that in mind, the less egos kind of matter,” said guitarist and vocalist Radio Bo. As the band works toward releasing new music and expanding its audience, Aliqua hopes to further strengthen its place within Tampa’s evolving cultural landscape. by @wusfjazz

A newly assembled jazz quartet led by Sarasota-based pianist and saxophonist Rafael “Ruffus” Silva made its public debut in the WUSF studio and will introduce audiences to an ensemble rooted in collaboration, improvisation and a deep appreciation for jazz tradition. The group features trumpeter and flugelhorn player Justin Renfrow, drummer James Varnado, bassist Nick Spagnuolo and Silva, who performs on piano and alto saxophone. This Studio Session marked the quartet’s first appearance together outside the rehearsal room. Originally based in Boston, Silva brings nearly two decades of professional experience to the project. A graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in performance, he is proficient on more than 15 instruments including jazz piano, saxophone, flute and bass. He specializes in jazz from the early and mid-20th century and maintains a repertoire of more than 900 songs, which features selections from the Great American Songbook and other foundational works of the genre. The quartet’s repertoire reflects Silva’s diverse musical background and broad artistic interests. The debut performance featured two original compositions alongside interpretations of music by Brazilian songwriter Edu Lobo, modern rock band Radiohead and acclaimed jazz trumpeter Tom Harrell. Silva said he seeks out material that balances familiarity and discovery to create opportunities for both audience engagement and musical exploration. While the group arrived with carefully prepared arrangements, Silva emphasized that improvisation remains at the heart of the ensemble’s identity. “We’re living the spirit of jazz, which for me is just creation, spontaneous creation at the moment,” Silva said. “We have something prepared, but we bring this inventive set of ideas that we all collaborate with.” As the quartet looks toward future performances, its members hope to continue building on that shared creative approach while introducing audiences to fresh interpretations and original works. by @wusfjazz
