Our booth at Asia NOW is now on view | Booth M08 | 22–26 October

Katara Art Center, in collaboration with Wusum Gallery, is thrilled to participate in the 11th edition of Asia NOW, Paris.

Featuring a duo presentation, the booth brings together works by Qatari artists Noora Al Hardan (b. 1999) and Hamad AlFayhani (b. 1999), whose practices converge around acts of visual manipulation—cropping, layering, blurring, and distortion. Working primarily with photography, both artists explore how images can mediate emotional states and reframe the ways we experience and internalise the spaces around us. While their approaches are distinct, a shared sensitivity to light, surface, and atmosphere runs through their work.

Special thanks to the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Paris for their continued support and cooperation.

Open Studio (2–11 September 2025) marked the culmination of Amna AlBaker’s residency at Katara Art Center, organized with Wusum Gallery. Over two months, the artist developed new works across textiles, drawing, and installation, exploring process as both instinct and devotion. Reworking familiar materials in freer ways and incorporating organic elements, the pieces reflected on memory, femininity, grief, and renewal, while drawing on influences such as Clarice Lispector and Louise Bourgeois.

Working from her studio at Katara Art Center, Amna AlBaker has been experimenting with new ideas and materials—textiles, words, painted surfaces, and fragments of research coming together in dialogue. Her process moves between writing, making, and reflecting, allowing memory and material to guide the work in unexpected ways.

The residency continues until 31 August, and will culminate in an open studio exhibition from 2–11 September 2025, where audiences are invited to encounter the work developed over the summer.⁩

Artist Studio: Amna AlBaker at Katara Art Center | 8 July - 31 August 2025

Wusum Gallery and Katara Art Center (KAC) are pleased to announce a summer artist studio residency with Qatari artist Amna AlBaker (b. 1996), taking place from 8 July to 31 August 2025.

KAC is providing Amna AlBaker with an independent working space to focus on the development of new work. Rooted in process and introspection, Amna’s practice moves fluidly between writing, painting, textiles, and visual research—often weaving together personal memory with collective histories.

The art studio residency offers her the space to think, make, and experiment freely, away from the demands of public display. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment between Wusum and KAC to support meaningful artistic practices in Qatar.

Musical elements are visible in Tarek Darwish’s print series “Fields”. Varying between majestic four metre panels to more intimate prints, these are the most playful works in the presented survey. After Darwish’s return to Doha in the early 1990s, access to a computer marked a moment of liberation for him. Since his return, Darwish has explored their potential vis-à-vis his practice. The “Fields” have a rhythmic and intricate quality to them, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of seeing. For Darwish, drawing is the only way to see and with their seemingly endless detailing, “Fields” series is a celebration of this: delicate exercises into one of the most important human activities.

‘Fields: Tarek Darwish’ is on view until 28 February.

The idea of a form is at the core of Tarek Darwish’s “Score” drawings currently on view as part of Darwish’s solo exhibition ‘Fields’ at Wusum Gallery. Created on a recognisable structure used to compose and ‘write’ music on, these drawings are inherently more abstract in their visual lexicon than “Forests” and “Letters” although Darwish also contrasts this spontaneity with recognisable symbols and an often intense encircling resembling a coding process. Here, the dialogue between form and chaos are legibly visible: the restless tempo is contrasted by the encircling which provides structure amidst all the random movement.

Artwork details:

The central concept underlying Tarek Darwish’s solo show ‘Fields’, namely that of the form, plays an integral role in the series “Letters”. Consisting of 35 drawings created between March 2018 and October 2019, the works assume the form of a letter between Darwish and viewers, musing on the subject of drawing. Juxtaposing organic points, spirals, vertical lines, smudges, and occasional traces of erasing pencil marks against the existing grids on the background of the paper, Darwish fiddles with the idea of a framework. Similarly to the “Forest” series, he presents a number of drawings with varying energies–united by their rhythmical and lyrical nature, yet somehow also raw and autonomous. Sequences and points, marks, and lines dominate this series, almost as if Darwish explores the different strategies and philosophies for a point and line.
