I really can't overstate how fortunate we are to have the @artmuseumofwvu right on campus! In class, we examined this WV-made piece by @mitch_epstein, and then got to view it in person at the museum. What an amazing learning opportunity for our students! We also explored the impressive Mapping Climate Change exhibit, featuring a fascinating tapestry installation. by @wvuphotography

I’m thrilled to announce my upcoming exhibition at West Virginia University on Wednesday, January 29 through February 28. I’ll be giving a talk at 5pm in Bloch Hall. If you’re in the area, I hope to see you!

Melissa Catanese is an artist and educator based in Pittsburgh, PA. She creates artist’s books and image constellations that merge her own photographs with found and anonymous imagery, transforming individual images into fluid, sensorial experiences within a collective context, and challenging ideas of authorship, representation, and the lifecycle of images.

In Mutations, Catanese combines darkroom experiments and archival images with newly made images from coastal and geological exploration. Central to the exhibition are photograms crafted from remnants of the historic carbon printing process–abstract “fossils” from pigmented gelatin that suggest transformation and evoke introspection.

Her photographs of bull kelp formations along the Pacific coast function as both observational studies and visceral metaphors, signaling bull kelp’s fragile role within environmental change while eliciting a bodily, almost intestinal response. Displayed alongside images of aquatic life, geological evidence, and archival materials, her work examines the interplay between human documentation and the psychological tension between abstraction and observation.

Mutations blurs artistic boundaries, embracing the recycling of motifs and the spirit of experimentation. Through seemingly dissonant yet interconnected elements, Catanese offers a meditation on ecological fragility, deep time, and the evolving nature of creative practice.
