Enjoying the views while cultivating corn!
This year we had poor germination in S Field so we ended up deciding to turn it in and plant a second time, and boy are we glad we did! While these nice straight lines and clean passes sure are satisfying, farming is anything but clear and straightforward. Lots of complex decisions make up the day-to-day, hindsight is 20/20, and often the hardest decisions are knowing when to call it a loss and move forward with a new plan by @wwcfarm

Wrapping up the spring semester on the Farm! Always lots going on, but here's some memorable moments from the past few weeks 🍀🪏

1. Elder dropping some knowledge during the crew meeting on identifying common trees and invasives on the farm
2. Cate breaking ground in Upper Field to give it a much needed makeover! It will be planted with a diverse warm season mix in the coming weeks
3. Blair and George Wilder talking silvopasture as we install electric protection on all the planted trees
4. Gen crew getting real familiar with a shovel and uncovering decades-old water line mysteries
5. Making baleage in Hatties for winter beef feed
6. Running irrigation on our first year perennial pastures in the evenings and dancing for more rain
7. Claiming victory in this year's Farm v Forestry softball game 😈 by @wwcfarm

🐷So happy to be a part of this farm program for 8+years now. Literally 12miles from our #asheville shop.

Watching the students learn and grow is truly inspirational. They study with us, do research with us, and lots of them even work with us! This is really one of the best raised, best eating pork I’ve ever experienced. Last up in the Fairview / Swannanoa Cluster of ASAP’s Farm Tour (Sept. 20-21) is Warren Wilson College Center for Working Lands (@wwcfarm, @wwc.garden.crew).

Visit a historic student-run agricultural operation! The Center For Working Lands makes up the agricultural and forestry land of Warren Wilson College. They raise beef, pork, lamb, eggs, vegetables, row crops, flowers, and agroforestry products—and do it all with student labor. Learn from young agriculturalists using conservation-minded practices. Go on guided tours through different parts of the farm, garden, and forestry operations. Visit the pigs and our particularly friendly wool sheep. Walk the garden grounds and pick your own flowers. Interested visitors can have a guided tour of the cattle and hair sheep, too!

100% grassfed and finished lamb, stew meat and grouns at the farm store NOW! Grazed @wwcfarm with their beef cattle on a mix of permanent pasture and mixed alfalfa finishing pastures. Lamb is 100% raised by students on Warren Wilson's 300 acres.
