Call for pitches: RELATIONSHIPS ISSUE

Relationships are the bonds we share with others, whether it be romantic or platonic. We ask you to explore all spheres of relationships, from ways you deal with your career to the strangers you meet in the club bathroom.

Relationships extend beyond the familial and romantic. For many, they are the basis for artistic inspiration, leading some to create stories about others or collaborating to create a new vision. Others hold relationships to the objects they carry in their everyday bag.

Some inspiration:

- A profile on artistic collaborators or store owners
- The stranger you met once in the bathroom and have followed on Instagram ever since
- Your relationship to your ex’s mom
- Your social media stalking list
- The objects your carry with you every day

———

Send a pitch to hello@pulsemag.ca by November 1 to be considered. Your email should include:

꩜ A short intro about yourself
꩜ A working title
꩜ A paragraph explaining your idea (Up to 3 ideas are welcome!)
꩜ 2 previous non-fiction writing examples (Can be unpublished)

Check out pulsemag.ca to see the type of content we publish (articles, interviews, & personal essays — try to keep it light, smart, funny and no trauma dumping). The theme is up to personal interpretation. All contributors are paid. DM us with any questions.

Once the deadline has passed, we'll reach out to let you know if we want to publish your idea and give you a deadline for the finished piece, which should be around 1000 words. taken in Montreal, Quebec by @wwwpulsemag

How gatekeeping and TikTok tasting menus made us better at ordering and worse at being people by Patrick Dunlop (@gingerdunlop) for The Secrets Issue. Read now at pulsemag.ca ⋆˚꩜。

A few years ago, I found an old article, clipped from The Gazette, buried deep in my dad’s office. It was a “Life Stories” column, half cracked and caked in dust, titled “Food for Thought: A Survival Guide to Family Dining,” dated October 4th, 2004.

I wasn’t shocked. Like many of his species, my father kept a lot of shit in there: broken chargers, photo albums, hundreds of books about The Beatles and/or one of the World Wars. For the life of him, though, what he could never keep was a secret. Big or small. He’d manage to hold strong for a week or two, then as soon as a remote would break or a toe would be stubbed, the truth just had to spill itself out. So, oblivious as ever, I kept reading.

The article was a fun little 500-word field study on the pitfalls and ketchup-based consequences of taking picky kids out to eat. The writing was witty and irreverent. Sincere yet sarcastic. Practical, with a fantastical flair for the familiar. It’s only when I got to its end that the frightening, if predictable, Shyamalan twist took shape.

Unbeknownst to me, the call was coming from inside the pantry. Turned out the father of the piece was my very own, and I, the clumsy, chocolate milk-mustachioed nightmare at the story’s center. taken in Montreal, Quebec by @wwwpulsemag

𝘚𝘰𝘧𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘓𝘢𝘤𝘦 by Meriem Haddou (@meriemsportfolio), featured in The Secrets Issue 𖦹

By the artist:

Lace has always felt curious to me; scared and sensual, holding secrets between intertwining threads. Lace is sensual and romantic. Between lovers, its motifs only able to be seen from very close. Lace simultaneously reveals and conceals the body, usually enveloping its most intimate parts which adds to this feeling of something that’s only meant for sacred eyes to see. This kind of containment and revealing feels like a secret, so to see lace, especially so closely feels like the finest form of luck.

Patterns always feel like they hold secrets, a collection of symbols. It always feels like decoding a message that’s only meant to be understood by some. Each filigree or thread feels like a whisper that’s only falling on and recognized by intended viewers. Patterning is very pertinent in my artistic practice, I use it as a tool to include coding messages in my work, drawing from traditional cultural motifs and patterns found in clothing/nature.

𝘚𝘰𝘧𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘓𝘢𝘤𝘦 is half of a mini series I’m currently working on. There’s something cheeky about these paintings, half exhibitionistic and half melancholic mystery. They provide a tender invitation to come closer. taken in Montreal, Quebec by @wwwpulsemag

Untitled charcoal and graphite art by Vuka Antunovic (@_akuv)

About the artist: I’m a Montreal based artist with a major focus on charcoal drawing. I create auto-ethnographic works that aim to dialogue with a viewer in a somber tone. Taking from my every day experiences, I aim to translate my perceptions into an abstract visual language to be shared. taken in Montreal, Quebec by @wwwpulsemag

15 New Bond Street by Léa Taillefer (@americanlean) featured in The Secrets Issue. Shot in Tāmaki Makaurau. Models: Sophia Pelzel and Chloe Pollard ꩜⋆.°⭑

This photographic series, shot in New Zealand, examines the erosion of identity within a toxic social scene — the gradual loss of self as one slips into the roles and performances expected by others. The images move between voyeurism and intimacy, staging moments that are both tender and unsettling. Their airy, cinematic quality invites the viewer to linger in the in-between, where truth and façade blur, and where the subject exists as both participant and witness.

About Léa: I’m a Montreal-based visual artist and filmmaker working across photography, moving image, and installation. My practice blends narrative ambiguity with a cinematic visual language, often exploring identity, intimacy, and the liminal spaces where public and private blur. My work has been exhibited and published internationally, including solo and group shows in Montreal, New York, Auckland, and Wellington. by @wwwpulsemag

Life, when you’re unreachable, isn’t as bad as it seems, writes Eva Rizk (@evarizk). Read about the bubbling tech trend at pulsemag.ca ꩜⋆.°⭑

There’s rumours going around Montreal that 20-somethings are using flip phones. I first heard it back in March, when a friend of a friend complained of young guys switching out their iPhones for the morally superior flip phone, becoming, as a result, out of reach.

To most of Gen Z, switching out your smartphone for a flip phone sounds like a nightmare. Our phones go everywhere with us yet we aren’t good at keeping in touch over phone calls. Instead, we communicate over Instagram group chats, story likes, and shared posts. A response to a DM or text is expected from anywhere between a couple seconds to a few hours—anytime above that may warrant spam calls and a wellness check. So what happens when you’re cut off from all your notifications, because of a flip phone? taken in Montreal, Quebec by @wwwpulsemag
