The Crested Butte 50 miler!!

I crossed the finish line Saturday with a smile beaming on my face & a body that felt so dang strong (despite throwing up at mile 48), I still can’t believe how happy I am with how my second race went!!

I’ve been buzzing about this race since I signed up & as it actually approached, I found myself bubbling with self doubt. For 4 months, I’ve dedicated myself to training (okay well maybe I skipped the PT and the lifting but I did the running part) and it didn’t feel like enough. Hills are still the bane of my existence. None of my long training runs had paces anywhere close to what my goal was. I repeated “you’re going to complete, not compete.” I tried to remember that I signed up for this to see a beautiful place at peak fall colors, push myself not just to do the race but to do all of the training, and most importantly, to have fun. Even as I made the drive out to CB, I couldn’t imagine a world where I felt happy with the outcome.

A text from a friend the night before shifted my perspective and gave me my race mantra; “this is an opportunity to show yourself love and fight for yourself” which I know sounds a little silly. It’s an optional, recreational run with snacks provided along the way but every time I felt like I was ready to take it really easy, I wrapped my arms around myself, said I love you, and kept fighting for an effort that I could be proud of. I’ve historically never been much of a runner. I’m never hoping to stand on a podium or break a record but I love running, I love racing, I love seeing how deep I can dig all the same.

I found myself giggling on the downhills, unable to hold in the hooting and hollering at how much of a blast this trail was. I yapped with all the wonderful runners around me all along the way and crossed the finish line to a round of high fives from all those I shared miles with. I sang and danced and stopped to take in the stunning views. I was slightly slower than my goal goal time and I honestly couldn’t give a damn. I’ve never pushed myself that hard for that long, I’ve never been able to keep my downhill miles that fast even 40 miles in, I’ve never had that much fun on a run 💜 taken in Crested Butte, Colorado by @wyldjules

I trained for the Dead Horse 50 almost entirely alone

A few runs with a friend or two and hundreds of miles on my own, by the time it was race month, I was lonely and bored and very much doubting if I’d continue with this new hobby after my first race

But I loved running all the same and I didn’t want it to be that way

I had tried to go to run club a few years ago, immediately fell a mile behind the group and my ego couldn’t take it, I didn’t go back

So at the beginning of the summer, I put on a brave face, told myself if the only thing holding me back from running with others is my ego, maybe it’s time to let my ego get crushed, and I’m so glad I did

I awkwardly forced my social anxiety to the side and talked to strangers over bubbly water in the parking lot still tomato red from pushing myself to keep up. I let myself be the last to the top of the hills most weeks without embarrassment.

I’ve barely ran alone this summer. Whether it’s part of the run club or with friends I’ve met through running, my runs are full of laughter and sharing gummy worms. We get high on mountain views and run down hills with grins on our faces. I don’t have to apologize for my pace or my pots or my frequent pee breaks.

I’m 10 days out from my second race, the Crested Butte 50, & I can’t believe how different things are two years after dead horse. I can’t believe I didn’t even know this community at the beginning of this year & I can’t wait for all the miles ahead

a year after the pct

& I could cry with overwhelming gratitude for these months of walking from @visitcarsoncity to Canada

I didn’t expect the people I met out there to become so important to me, I didn’t expect the places to be burned into my memory, & I didn’t expect that a year later, I’d finally be uncovering what I truly learned out there

I’ve got a lil more pct content coming because I’m finally in a place to actually spend time reflecting on it & going through what I wrote and filmed out there (& I need to get the phone storage back before my next thru hike tbh) so hope you’re not tired of it yet

shout out to @nemoequipment for giving me a roof over my head (aka the best tent) & a quilt to keep me warm on this trip 🤍

I felt like Durango had run its course in my life when I got back from the PCT

I loved it and I loved my people but I was convinced there was nothing left for me. No room to grow, no new friends, no new opportunities. I’d stayed in one place too long and it was time to move on

I was terrified I wasn’t where I was supposed to be, stuck in safety instead of pushing myself into evolution.

I made a promise that if I still felt that way in a year, I’d leave. Mindfully and intentionally this time, not on a whim like most of the moves prior. I also told myself if I was serious, I needed to prove my fear was true. So I’ve spent this year so far focused on expanding my world inside of Durango.

I’ve done things I’ve never done before, I’ve put myself out there and made new friends and been in some really uncomfortable situations, I’m joining clubs and actually showing up and talking to people, I’m finding my edge and breathing through the discomfort, welcoming the opportunity to grow in such a familiar place.

I thought I was done but now I’m so grateful for how my life has changed and grown. How I have changed and grown. All the people I now have the chance to call friends and all the places I almost didn’t get the chance to know intimately. Maybe one day, it’ll be time to move and start fresh again but for now, we’re going to see how beautiful and big life here can be
