Spoken Latin varied enormously from time to time and place to place during the age of the Roman Empire. Three really, really big books by the scholar J.N. Adams are the best guide to that variation: “Bilingualism and the Latin Language,” “The Regional Diversification of Latin,” and “Social Variation and the Latin Language.” They’re not easy books but the ideas matter! Did Marcus Aurelius cause the Viking Age 600 years after his death? Kind of! Barbarians recruited into the Roman army during the Marcomannic Wars (166-180) returned home to Scandinavia after the wars were over, bringing new ideas and their weapons with them. Many of those weapons ended up deposited in Scandinavian bogs, where they tell us about the first kings in Northern Europe. The scale of interconnection over huge distances in the Roman world was incredible: We see people from Syria and Africa in Britain, huge quantities of Roman coins in India and even occasional finds of denarii north of the Arctic Circle. Not everybody was moving around all the time, but it was possible to do so, and even out-of-the-way places could have surprising ties to the larger world.
