Bather.

Big Blue (2/2)

Big Blue is made up of hand-picked and dyed poems, pictures, recipes, phrases, illustrations, and excerpts that speak to the contrasting sensations of paralysis when faced with the abundant opportunity of young adulthood and enlightenment when pursuing an intentional life.

Poems about taking chances and fleeting time, recipes and directions for entertaining reflect our desire for connection and belonging, excerpts referencing fear and loss of security, and pictures, illustrations, and definitions that I leave for your interpretation.

The hyperrealist boy was illustrated with massive ears to reflect the copious amount of perspective people say to you in your young adult years. Often projecting their own perceived misdirections, leaving you with a deep sense of power in your decision-making, and fear to not repeat their regrets. Visible in the boy’s expression is this weight of both the good and bad.

The loose wildflowers shadowing the collage are included as a connection back to the original inspiration for the piece “Growing/Dying”, a song about growing pains by The Backseat Lovers. Big Blue (1/2)

Visual art has always been second to music. My relationship with music surpasses any feeling of romantic love, platonic love, or whatever attempt I can make at articulating profound meaning. When you feel so abstrusely for something, as I do for music, an unmatched personal pressure coincides when you decide to make that thing you pedestal.

So, as I’ve spent the past 9 months working on my first music project, I’ve leaned on visual art as a crutch. A creative big brother to remind me of the inevitable ebb and flow of the process, and take the pressure off the music when roadblocks feel cemented, setbacks make the horizon curve, and uncertainty taps me on the shoulder.

With my shift of focus more to the music, the painting series I had planned is now just one. This piece. Big Blue.

Big Blue encompasses the contrasting enlightenment and sense of blindness that, “the world is your oyster” and the pursuit of a passion can trigger. It is how scary my surrendering to my music is, and how palpably rewarding it has simultaneously been. In Big Blue I hope you feel heavy, I hope you feel light. I hope you see the feelings of navigating a purpose-driven life. I hope you see yourself.
