Just spent two days on the Gold Coast at the AI + Marketing Summit for Builders, hosted and run by @theprofessionalbuilder

Two days with residential builders working on their business instead of in it.

The topics that stuck with me:

Lead follow-up speed. The builder who replies first often wins the job.

Pricing and contracts. A full pipeline only pays if the quote and the contract protect your margin once you’re on site.

AI on the admin. It won’t build the house, but it can take the quoting paperwork and follow up off your plate.

From where I sit as an accountant, the margin side is where it all lands. Good systems in the office show up in the numbers.

Good to be around people who care about doing it properly.

For a lot of builders, developing your own project is a natural next step. The construction work is familiar, and the full margin on a development is the draw.

Most construction businesses start with the owner doing all of it, right down to the books at night. That works while the business is small enough to keep in your head, but as it grows, finance is usually the first function where the owner's time and expertise run out.

Finance help tends to arrive in an order: a bookkeeper, then a financial controller, then a CFO, each solving a problem the one before it cannot. The real question is not whether to bring it in, but when, and how.
