Last Sunday recap! We welcomed Halimo @xalimo__ @whatsforcasho from London, who shared her generous and delicious Somali inspired cooking with the Gather community titled “Big Plates, Big Hearts.” From Maraq, Sambusas through to the delicious platters of lamb and hispi cabbage bariis, everyone left with full hearts and bellies. “Recently, I’ve observed a growing awareness and enthusiasm surrounding Somali cuisine in the UK. It’s regularly praised by food bloggers, who flock to review the latest London restaurant on their radar, from @sabiibuk and @alkahfresturant to @brothersrestaurantlondon and @rayaanrestaurantlondon. For many, it’s their first encounter with Somali food. They share curiosity about the presence of bananas on plates and express surprise at the large portion sizes. Somali cuisine has emerged as a particular favourite among the halal food scene, where akhis are reassured by the absence of an extensive wine list and, instead, revel in the presence of ever-flowing mango lassi.”

This week’s restaurant review by @xalimo__ is about the evolution of Somali food in London over the last few years, and what the hype means for the restaurants, the old and new clientele, and regular patrons. It is also a review of Maida in Streatham, an old-school Somali restaurant that sadly closed during the reporting of this story.

ᴇᴠᴇɴᴛ ᴀɴɴᴏᴜɴᴄᴇᴍᴇɴᴛ - ꜱᴜɴᴅᴀʏ 4 ᴍᴀʏ - “ᴄᴀꜱʜᴏ” ᴡɪᴛʜ ʜᴀʟɪᴍᴏ ʜᴜꜱꜱᴀɪɴ

We’re thrilled to announce this event with Halimo Hussain, a British Somali cook, writer and founder of food platform @whatsforcasho. We’re welcoming Halimo to Berlin from London who will be serving up a late lunch for thirty lucky guests on Sunday 4th May @ringbarberlin . The event concept, titled “Big plates big hearts” aims to tell a story about the generous and expansive capacities of Somalis to display care through food. Large serving platters, which are common in Somali cuisine, will be used to encapsulate this.

Guests will enjoy a communal style late lunch with Somali artworks displayed in the gallery attached to Ringbar. Those who miss out on the dinner can join for drinks from 7pm. Gather aims to create a safe and inclusive space for all people, so as always, open minds and good vibes only.

ᴅɪɴɴᴇʀ

The overall objective of the dinner, through both food and broader aesthetics, is to convey the warm spirit that emanates throughout Somali culture. Enjoy a playful exploration of Somali classics through large sharing platters of bariis (aromatic rice) with lucious lamb, or alternatively slow-cooked cabbage for vegetarians, serve as the classic mains. These are accompanied by snacks such as crispy sambuusas, side dishes like Cambulo (mung bean salad), and desserts like Timir (date) cake with shaax cream sweetly rounds things off. It’s all about big plates and big hearts—inspired by the communal spirit that runs through Somali culture.
*For this event we cannot cater for vegans.

ʜᴀʟɪᴍᴏ ʜᴜꜱꜱᴀɪɴ

Casho, which means “dinner” in Somali, is an online food platform and supper club based in London. Founded by cook and writer Halimo, Casho explores evolving Somali foodways through a diasporic lens, using recipe development and shared meals as a way to reconnect with cultural heritage — all while carving out more space for Somali cuisine within the broader culinary landscape.
