September is over, and I wanted to do my yearly Chiari Awareness post a little differently this year. 💜

Last year was about looking back and realizing how far I had come.

This year, I’m thinking about everything I lost—and everything I had to learn to appreciate because of it.

Walking. Talking. Moving my body without fear. Being independent. Simply existing without wondering what my body would allow me to do.

We don’t realize how important these things are until we lose them.

My brain surgery was a treatment, not a cure. Chiari is something I still live with.

Surgery didn’t give me my old life back. It gave me another chance to figure out what my life could look like.

Some things I had to relearn. Some came back differently. Some took time.

And some parts of me came back in a completely different, beautiful font.

That’s why I work so hard now. I know what it feels like to lose things you never thought you’d have to fight for and to celebrate things other people don’t think twice about😕

So when you see me chasing goals, creating, working, showing up, and refusing to give up on the life I want, you may not understand how much those things mean to me.

But I do.

I don’t want Chiari to be the only thing people know about me, but it is part of my story.

Every September, I want to remind people that Chiari is real, surgery isn’t necessarily a cure, and you can’t always see what someone is carrying.

I may look fine.

Sometimes I am. Sometimes I’m not.

Both can be true. 💜

I lost pieces of myself.
I fought to get pieces of her back.
And now I’m building something beautiful with what’s here.

I wish I could go back and hug this version of me. 🥺🤍

I never recorded myself singing back then. I hated hearing my own voice, was terrified of performing, and put so much pressure on myself to be perfect even while learning how to feel comfortable being seen and heard.

I was a freshman when COVID hit, and by sophomore year, school was mostly virtual. In this video, I was learning the song, preparing to perform it, perfecting the recording, and coming in for extra help all while going through more than I knew how to express. If I care about something, I show up🫠

Watching this now means so much more than whether I hit every note.

Music became one of my safe spaces. It helped me connect with people, practice being uncomfortable, express myself, and slowly learn how to take up space. 🤍

I didn’t know it then, but moments like this were preparing me for the spaces I’m in now.

She wasn’t behind. She wasn’t failing. She didn’t need to be perfect.

She was learning, trying, and showing up.
