We talk to one of this year’s 𝐀𝐀𝐅 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 recipients, dance artist @xin_with_ji, who used this time to learn from practitioners across other art forms. This has led to his collaboration with painter @guotentag and the development of 𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐷𝑟𝑎𝑔, an excerpt of which was presented at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in June earlier this year. Without the Fellowship, he says, “I don’t think I would ever have been brave enough to think about challenging the form.”

Drawing from Xin Ji’s debut solo work Body Story, this intimate gallery performance traces the journey of a body through moments where the emotional and physical collide.

Performed with long-time collaborator and composer Alistair Deverick, the work moves through uncertainty, recklessness and euphoria, unfolding an intimate personal narrative through movement, live sound, costume and image. Set within Objectspace, this version brings Body Story 0.25 into close proximity with the audience, offering ways to consider the body as a vehicle for resistance, alchemy and transformation.

We are so incredibly grateful to everybody who has come along to 𝐵𝑜𝑑𝑦 𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 so far and for all your lovely words and support! Tonight is our closing night and we are sold out ♥

“As a debut solo work, 𝐵𝑜𝑑𝑦 𝑆𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 showcases Xin Ji’s boldness as both a performer and a storyteller. It is a fearless exploration of the human body in all its complexities—fragile, resilient, evolving, and undefined.” — Blackguard Media Reviews

“Xin Ji’s performance is thrilling, enlivening, and difficult to look away from (although there’s plenty else gorgeous to look at onstage).” — @sbrookbrooks, 𝐶𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑜𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑟

Toronto, thank you for welcoming us with so much warmth and sunshine ☀️

@summerworksfun, thank you for inviting us, and for all the care and hard work that made our little Body Story journey here happen so beautifully. Especially to everyone working front&behind the scenes, thank you for all your support, patience, and all the smiles. I feel like those smiles are now permanently part of the Body Story archive😊

And a huge thank you to everyone who supported us and made it possible for us to even be on this journey in the first place. There are so many people who helped us get here, in so many different ways. Without that support, none of this would have happened. We really, really appreciate you.

To my Body Story fam: they say one of the biggest tests of a relationship is travelling together. After this trip, I can confidently say I’m ready to marry all of you💍

And I have to shout out two extra special humans, @yellowperilproductions & @davidfarrier. All the laughter, the incredible energy, and all the running around and support… somehow everything aligned perfectly for us to have this beautiful time together on the other side of the world. Honestly, what else can I say. 缘分. It was meant to be✨

Thank you to every beautiful human I met through this experience. You are what made this whole thing so much more joyful, colourful, and unforgettable.

So let me quietly say this through the screen:

I really hope our paths cross again somewhere, sometime, not too far away.

Until next time 🫶🏼 by @xin_with_ji

A slightly late little Sydney wrap-up / appreciation post 🫶🏼

Earlier this winter I spent two very special weeks in Sydney with @performancespace Queer Development Program at @pact_sydney, developing and sharing a new little work, SPACE DRAG / Self-Intro🟢

I came into the residency wanting to make something that felt like a self-introduction through my body, and over those two weeks this little piece slowly found its shape. I’m really grateful for the space to play, question, try things, change my mind, and eventually share it with two beautiful sold-out audiences👏🏼

🥁Sound Design by superstar @alistair_deverick
💻AV by the talent himself @untitled_peace

A very special thank you to @bettygrumble, for your generosity, care and support throughout this creative process. Our check-ins gave me so much clarity and confidence when I needed it. Thx You Body! 🦵🏼

Huge love and thanks to the whole Performance Space and PACT teams for holding such a generous, thoughtful and beautifully organised two weeks. To all the mentors who shared their practices with us, and to this gorgeous group of QDP artists, thank you for the conversations, laughs, watching, listening, making and just being together.

I arrived in Sydney not really knowing what these two weeks would become, and left with new friendships, new questions, and a little piece of work that I feel very close to.

A very special chapter. Thank you Sydney ✨
