These images were actually shot in February 2025, before my spontaneous trip back to Taipei, but for many different reasons, I never really found the “right moment” to share them. Then again, when you think about it, is there ever really such a thing as perfect timing?

So I wanted to share this work created together with people I deeply admire.

I designed a newspaper-format specimen to present the Revue family. The idea was to treat each typeface as a distinct character, with the paper itself becoming their stage for performance. I gave every cut its own strong personality and invited them to embody performers and performing artists that inspire me.

Revue started during my third semester in MATD with the guidance of my mentor Kai, and I later continued developing it into my diploma project.

These images were taken by my friend Farah, who is an incredibly talented photographer and one of my biggest supports during my time at ECAL.

Revue is the diploma project of @xleetype

Revue is an expressive, versatile typeface family inspired by the drama and typographic flair of 19th-century theatre posters. Its 12 serif styles—Romans and Italics—are grouped by contrast: High, Low, and Slab. Each shares a stem width within its weight, exploring contrast, serif shape, and proportion to evoke distinct tones and dramatic tension. The family also includes a Grotesk, based on the Slab’s structure and tuned to echo its rhythm in sans form, and a Hanzi Slab, an experimental serif-gothic hybrid that brings the same sense of character across scripts. An Open Ending is a photo-text book where a photographer and a type designer offer parallel interpretations of moment and mood. The reader is invited into a shared performance shaped by rhythm, reading, perception, and pause.

“An Open Ending: Visual Dialogue of Moments” is a collaborative photo-text project shaped by the same theatrical concept as my diploma typeface: Revue. Together with Farah (@yevamir), we invited the stage onto the page. The photographer tells the story through images, while I respond with text. Rather than illustrating one another, image and text exist in loose, intuitive dialogue.

Photography captures moments of light, shadow, and presence, while text reflects mood, emotion, and perception. The reading experience is non-linear, open-ended, and shaped by the reader’s own rhythm, unfolding not in real time, but in reading time.

𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘸 𝘢 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘩 𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘪𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. 𝘖𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘵—𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭, 2017.

𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 is a project by Xuanlynn, an artist based in Antwerp, and a dear friend. Her work captures the dialogue between the environment, the artist, and the artwork. She listens to the language of rust, moss, and weathered walls, translating them into photography and wax. In time, her pieces return to nature, continuing the conversation.

Designing this book, I wished to mirror her approach. Its size aligns with her photographs; its rough edges echo the textures of her wax. Insert pages invite interaction, more than a book, it’s an experience.

Woven with our interviews, her images, and her art, this book is not just an archive but an extension of her practice—a space where art, nature, and time converse.

Building on the spirit of Giela, its Italic draws inspiration from old-style serifs with a Garamond-like vibe while embodying Martin Margiela’s ethos of defying conventions. Although designing swashes for a monospaced typeface is uncommon, Giela Italic introduces this feature as an experimental exploration. It challenges the boundaries of monospaced design by incorporating intricate details and refining the relationships between letters. This approach investigates how complexity can be harmoniously integrated within the constraints of a fixed-width frame, pushing the limits of what a monospaced typeface can achieve (and having fun along the way) hehe✨

The design concept of 𝘗𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥𝘴 centers on circles, life/growth, organics, and urgency.

I emphasized circles and organic shapes in the lettering to reflect growth and life, with the layout also echoing these themes. The dual cover symbolizes a cyclical relationship, inviting readers to start from either section. The loose, “growth-like” arrangement of the artists’ works evokes organic development and breathing space, reminiscent of DNA. I chose a font that conveys tightness, strangeness, and slight difficulty in reading to spark curiosity about the theme 🌏🌱🪸💥

Morpheus is a typeface that combines futuristic, robust shapes with organic elements, reflected in its half-square, half-rounded strokes. It draws inspiration from avant-garde fashion designer Hussein Chalayan, renowned for his conceptual garments and innovative techniques that weave deep, personal narratives.

Originally designed for text as an experiment and exploration of readability, Morpheus also offers two stylistic sets—full-square and full-rounded—making it suitable for expressive display purposes.

The typeface was developed during the course “Déplacement,” where students received an artist or designer as inspiration to create a typeface. This project was mentored by @alice_savoie at @ecalmatd ✨
