As I slowly make my return back into the drag world, I’m looking back at this last number that physically broke me. It was truly my favorite mix and performance that I’ve ever put together, despite it dislocating my knee, leading to surgery and keeping me in bed pondering life for the past couple months. I’ll be returning to wacky tomorrow with something very different and will be hopefully making even more appearances around very soon:) Love you all.

I’ve had this mix/performance idea blooming in my head for a while now and was originally planning to take more time before doing it. I’m glad i just up and did it even though it wasnt “perfect” to how I envisioned it. We don’t know how much time we have here and what obstacles might come our way at any moment. Just do the thing!!

@kneecap32 My favorite lads have been a huge inspiration to me for a while now. When the world around us seems so dystopian, everyday more rights stripped, more corrupt politicians making more moves to support genocides, KNEECAP’s music and activism has provided such hope to me. They have given me a reason to wake up in the mornings and keep moving, to never stop taking action against these giant villains in the world.

Shoutout and rest in such peace to Sinéad O’Connor for being another huge inspiration to me in both music and activism.

Thank you to @lucy_cigarettes for giving me an extra opportunity to perform after I was hit with an injury during my first try, and thank you for being such a supportive and cool person all around:)

Thank you to @33goldenstreet for providing a real cool space for us and everyone there being very kind and helpful when I really needed it.

And even though I’ve told you guys a bunch already, thank you to my friends and partners who have been there for me and continue to show up in so many ways.

Love you all

Sixteen Tons- Tennessee Ernie Ford

While I love this very successful and popular version of this song, it was originally written and performed by Merle Travis in 1947. During this era of Cold War paranoia, many folk artists who sang of workers’ struggles were targeted and silenced by the us government. Later it was revealed that Merle’s original version was restricted when FBI agents advised radio stations not to play it, referring to Travis as a “communist sympathizer”. While it would still be cool if he had been, he was not. He just saw how the coal mining business and system of company scrip constantly wore down his overworked father and shared that struggle in his music.

When Tennessee Ernie Ford released his recording of the song in 1955 with a bit less pushback, it topped the charts for many weeks. These lyrics scream out a struggle that working class people feel deeply, both then and now. We are all tired and exploited, by design. They want us so worn down that we won’t have the energy to even think about why it is we never taste the fruits of our labor.

Pay attention to the art made by artists who are censored and silenced, dropped from labels and agents when they speak out. Pay attention to the artists who challenge their government and the companies that run it.
