Horses 61x91cm oil and acrylic on wood board 2026 #xuanruwang #oilonwood #contemporarypaintings by @xuanruwang_
As the exhibition enters its closing days, Leah Xuanru Wang’s 𝘼𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝙄 & 𝙄𝙄 have become a point of quiet resonance among collectors, works that linger both visually and emotionally long after the first encounter. For Leah, painting functions like amber, a material that holds the fleeting and the eternal at once. In these works, memory is suspended rather than fixed. Forms appear sealed within the surface, hovering between presence and disappearance, body and trace. Working in layered mixed media on wood panel, Leah treats painting as a body that carries time and residue. Her practice draws on Aby Warburg’s notion of the Pathosformel, where gestures of love, loss, and historical emotion persist across time. The result is an image that feels both intimate and archaeological, a surface that preserves sensation while allowing it to quietly unfold. Born in Jingdezhen and now based in London, Leah completed her MRes Fine Art at the Royal College of Art in 2024 following a BA in Film Production at the University for the Creative Arts. Her practice draws on film, classical painting, and literary sources, tracing how emotion moves through history and into the present. Amber Series 2 mix medium on wood board 41 x 31cm 2025 #xuanruwang #oilonboard #contemporarypaintings by @xuanruwang_
Amber mix medium on wood board 40.5x 30.5cm 2025 Painting is like amber. It is about the moment and the eternal, about fleeting memories. What distinguishes painting from images is that painting has a body. Rather than a body, it is more like a corpse, a mummy, an amber-encased insect. On an afternoon in ancient times, when sunlight bore down relentlessly on all the dust, an insect passed by. Resin flowed down from a pine tree and fell upon the insect. Struggling with its frail, barren body, the insect was faintly enveloped and swallowed. The resin solidified into transparent, sturdy amber. From then on, time treats it as time treats gold. #xuanruwang #oilonwood #contemporarypaintings by @xuanruwang_
