💛 Once a Xavierite, ALWAYS a Xavierite! 💛

Some of the most important members of our team never put on a uniform.

Last night, the Gold Rush welcomed a very special guest to the Convocation Center for Men’s Basketball Media Day — Mrs. Brendolyn McKenna, Xavier Class of 1967!

A devoted supporter of Xavier Athletics for years, Mrs. McKenna has been a constant presence in the stands, season after season, cheering on the Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets from her familiar seat right behind the team bench.

Head Coach Tyrone Mitchell shared this tribute:

“Every program needs people who believe in it through every season, every challenge and every triumph. Mrs. McKenna represents that kind of unwavering commitment. Year after year, she’s right there behind our bench, giving our young men her energy, her encouragement and her love. That kind of loyalty is the heartbeat of Xavier Basketball. We’re grateful for everything she has meant to this program, and we wanted her to know that she’s just as much a part of this team as anyone wearing a jersey.”

Several decades after graduating from Xavier, Mrs. McKenna continues to embody what it means to be FOREVER GOLD.

Thank you, “Ms. B,” for your enduring love, loyalty and dedication to Xavier athletes. This seat of honor belongs to you! 💛

The Gold Rush family is excited to welcome Terrence “TJ” Jones as our new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach!

TJ’s Xavier journey has come full circle:

•Gold Rush Student-Athlete
•XULA Alumnus
•Graduate Assistant Coach
•Assistant Coach

During his five seasons in the Gold Rush uniform, TJ appeared in 110 games, recorded 418 assists and 211 steals, and helped Xavier capture three conference tournament championships.

After hanging up the jersey, he moved to the sideline—supporting player development, scouting, film study and team operations. Now, he takes the next step as a member of Coach Tyrone Mitchell’s staff.

A NEW CHAPTER. THE SAME MISSION.

Xavier University of Louisiana is proud to announce Tyrone Mitchell as Head Coach of the Gold Rush Men’s Basketball program!

Coach Mitchell begins his 12th season at Xavier, having served most recently as Co-Head Coach during the 2025–26 season. Over more than a decade in the Gold and White, he has played an integral role in building a program defined by winning, consistency and the development of young men on and off the court.

182 wins
6 20-win seasons
3 conference tournament championships
3 consecutive NAIA National Championship first-round victories

But Coach Mitchell’s story is about more than basketball.

From New Iberia, Louisiana, to starring at Northwestern State, to seven seasons of professional basketball in Europe, and ultimately back home to Louisiana, Coach Mitchell has built a career grounded in hard work, relationships and a commitment to helping young people reach their potential.

And throughout the journey, his family — his wife, Ajia, and their daughters — has been right there with him.

Now, after more than a decade helping build the foundation, Coach Mitchell takes the lead.

Congratulations, Coach Mitch!

The next chapter of Gold Rush Basketball starts now.
