It has been a long, long time since I have posted anything new here. The reason is that I became seriously ill with meningoencephalitis (inflammation in my brain). I’ve spent several weeks in the hospital, and after that a period of rehabilitation started, in which I had to relearn almost everything, from walking to writing, to …

A year later, I am left with serious cognitive impairments due to the brain damage that occurred. But there is hope: there is an innovative, specialist treatment in the USA. This is my only hope to get better and improve my disabilities.

To be able to afford this treatment, I have started a crowdfunding campaign. If you can spare anything, I’d be grateful for helping me to get the treatment!

Hardcore is more than music…

There’s a lot being said about the terrible situation in Ukraine. Don’t get me wrong: it’s good that we are talking about it. It’s good to show support. At the same time, semi-informed geopolitical commentaries, messages of outrage and images of support don’t do much for the people that are suffering in Ukraine or that are fleeing their country right now. If anything, echoing outrage or sadness, however genuine, might lead to a feeling of helplessness because the crisis is so much larger than our personal realm of influence.

However, there’s a lot that each of us can do to have an impact. We might not be able to stop a war, but we are able to help the Ukrainian people.

Three easy options:
there are many local grassroots organizations that are coordinating actions for humanitarian aid. Find one close to you and get involved. Collecting stuff, organizing transportation or places to stay for refugees, whatever you can do.
Donate. You night have seen a bunch of causes and charities everywhere, so you might not need me to point you in a specific direction. If you haven’t figured out which one to support: I’d suggest to support the @hardcorehelpfoundation . Together with 30 other organizations, they’ve set up a “Civilian Crisis Network”. All details about donating and other support options are on their page.
Last, but not least: use the subversive power of the internet. Let’s not forget that the people in Russia don’t have easy access to information due to all forms of censorship and state controlled media. What you can do: google-maps-click on a random restaurant in Russia, and leave a five-star review. And in the review text, write a concise message about what’s going on in the Ukraine.

I am not claiming to have any knowledge about what the people in Ukraine are going through. I just would like to apply my outrage in a constructive manner, and urge you to do the same. Humane support.

Abandon. When their “The Death of Urgency” came out, I never really got into them. It theoretically checked all boxes for me, but it didn’t really move me. I revisited their record earlier (it’s on the bandcamp page of @catalystxrecords), and I must admit: I was wrong. The record is much better than my judgemental mind made them out to be. Cool screaming vocals, drumming with loads of crashes/cymbals, chugging guitars with gain up to 11, it’s all there…

Deadlock is a German melodic death metal band. When they started, there were fully vegan straight edge, but now they have new, non-straight edge band members. They are still a outspoken vegan band: I think pretty much every song on their “Manifesto” record is about animal rights?

Cries of the Tormented was named after a Contempt song, I assume. Polish 90ies metalcore - as an outsider to that all, it looks like they really had a thriving scene there in the nineties. I literally know nothing about this band, other than that they were vegan edge. And that they released a cassette called “Life. Truth.Pain.”

Trial. I’ve been hesistant to post about Trial here. I could use a cop-out and say that’s because I’m not sure they are/were a vegan straight edge band. That they fall firmly in the “bands with ideas and ideals” bracket, and that a vegan sxe label feels way too restrictive to describe them. But that would be distorting the truth to be more convenient for myself.

The actual reason has much less to do with Trial, and much more with myself. The real reason dates back to 1999 (or 1998? I am doubting my own memory right now…). I was in a bad place, mentally. Call it depressed, call it anxiety, call it whatever. I didn’t know where I was, where I was going and where I wanted to be.
For some reason that is still beyond me, I decided to travel cross country, to Leeuwarden, to see Trial play. I didn’t really know the band that well at that point, but I saw a flyer of their Euro tour, and for some reason I decided to go to that show. I think being an introverted, anciety ridden, depressed kid makes you do weird stuff, like going to hardcore shows all by yourself, stand to the side, and literally not talk to a single person all night. Yeah, I wasn’t a fun person back then…
Somewhere during their set, Greg Bennick talked about the conventions at shows, about the rituals of a hardcore show. About the fingerpointing, the singalongs, the moshing. And what would happen if we’d throw all conventions overboard and move / act how we felt for the next three minutes. And then launched into “When there’s nothing left to lose”. And that call to action resonated with me so much, that I let go, for the first time in ages. I cried of anger, and out of pain I punched the wall I was standing next to. And then my hand started swelling, and I went to the ER later that night. I think nobody knows I was at that show that night (deliberately so, maybe?), but that one song was an awakening from one of the darkest times in my life. And because of that, words cannot do Trial justice in my eyes. Thank you @gregbennick - that moment connected me with my thoughts and feelings, and moved me in a direction to confront myself and the world unapologetically.

Genuine is the solo project by @aaronedgeart - and just released new music. Fossils. “Fossils are the remains or traces of ancient life that have been preserved by natural processes. These songs by historically influential bands helped shape my hardcore and punk life, hope you enjoy my versions of them."
Even though it’s a collection of covers (and thus arguably not “new music”), I see it as new, because it’s an interesting mix. He played everything and sang everything, and all covers do sound like it’s in one own style (thus not too much like the original), but still has all the energy. Quite an ecclectic mix, too - from Ramones to Integrity, and from Bikini Kill to 108, for instance).

Barren from Jena (Germany) released a great, but often overlooked newschool-sounding record in 2014, called “anachronism ”. Their singer sadly passed away in 2017 when he had a bike accident. So in the memory of Timmi: “Stay angry and question everything.”

xFAVELAx. What an awesome name! They were from Barcelona (with members from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Spain), and only existed for a brief period in 2007. xFAVELAx had three singers, two guitars, a bass and a drummer. They had a two song demo, and played one show, at which they played both songs twice. There are two youtube clips around, but the demo was only online on myspace, so those songs vanished when myspace died… With members from nueva ética, CLEARxCUT, stillxstrong and more.

Cizalla is a vegan straight edge oi/ streetpunk band from Latin America (I’m not sure from which place exactly. On their 2020 bandcamp release “La voz vegana” they bring this interesting vibe of leftwing activist skinheads, if that makes sense. I don’t know if they are planning to release anything else, but for anyone with an interest in oi, this band is definitely worth checking out!
